Just picked up my first horizontal barrel smoker

yea i used a basket, i got the big chunks out, thats not my issue. its all the little pieces and the ashes. does everyone just sit there and scoop it out? it's a quite tedious, don't know if theres somethin simpler

RTU red high temp is a great sealer for everything that leaks, its available at NAPA in a regular caucking tube for around $10.00

I use a garden trowel and a bucket. Takes 3 minutes. Plus I can smoke all day without needing to clean it out.

Maybe your basket is too close to the bottom of the firebox. Or the bottom of your basket needs smaller holes. Or is it clogging up the intake?
