Welcome to the forum, always nice to see fellow Oregonians here!
I highly suggest you talk to your son about the smoker first - the reason being that there are many differant smokers and depending on the person using them some work better for that person than others. Keep in mind things like type of fuel (gas, wood, charcoal, or electric), will you have to move the smoker a lot to get it under storage or is there a covered area for it..... You get the idea
.... spend some time reading the forums on the differant smokers then ask question!
Now... that being said, I went the charcoal route and am the proud owner of a 22.5"
Weber Smokey Mountain (
WSM) smoker.
I really wanted to get back to charcoal after many many years of natural gas grilling. Made the mistake of spending $175 on a cheap side fire box smoker that worked OK after making a bunch of modifications to it. I then sold that smoker for $80 on craigslist, and stepped up to a
WSM - and have never looked back! The
WSM is as close to set-it-and-forget-it as you can get with a charcoal smoker, and it holds a TON of meat!
