Whats up guys. Im shawn im from a little town in florida called englewood. I am going to be going to school to be a chef soon. I have been cooking for as long as i can remember. I also started grilling recently and have gotten decent at it. i have always loved the taste of smoked food be it chicken, beef, pork or fish, I just hate having to ask my dad to smoke meat for me. I currently do not have a smoker but I am looking to build one I was told this is a good forum to get guidance on building a smoker. I know there is a bunch of different kinds of smokers but I do not know the difference between them. I am thinking of building either a propane or electric smoker. I know those two arent the traditional style smokers but I have been told that they are easier for a noob like me to learn to use. If any one has some tips on building one please help me out. I am open to learning as much as I can.

Welcome to the forum, look into building A UDS, there in the smoker section and not only a great smoker but can be a real fun build.Glad you found us.

i was thinking about that. i was browsing google and a good eats episode came up and he made a smoker out of two terracotta pots. any one know if that will work? or work good for just a few experimental smokes.

The only thing holding you back from making a smoker is your imagination.........Turn it loose and i bet you can make a smoker out of two coffee can.........

id love to see a smoker made out of a coffee can. i can smoke 1 hot dog at a time on it. lol. right now i am just getting a idea of what i need to buy or go find. where is the best places to find 55 gallon drums? all i have found are plastic and i have used those for bait wells. can you use a section of shopping cart for a grate or would it be easier to find a grill in the garbage and take the grate from it? of course i would sand blast the grate before use and get all the coating off i could

First, welcome to the forum.

I remember that Good Eats episode with the terra cotta pots, kind of a McGiver like.  But the basice idea he had, and electric hot plate with a tray of wood chips isn't really that much different that an electric smoker from the store.  Don't know why it wouldn't work.

Good luck.

Curt.

i was just thinking about it. since i cant really find a 55gallon drum around here but i can always get a keg. then i have people come over and drink the beer and i keep the keg since i paid a deposit for it. unless some one knows a good place i could try and look for a 55 gallon drum.

I saw that good eats episode on you tube and it actually got me looking into getting a smoker. Finding all the parts on the cheap would be the hard part. You can find all kindsa good deals on craigslist and modify it or use it as is.

i also want some thing that i can move around easy or load up in my truck myself easy for when i go fishing for days on end i can enjoy some good food. i had a idea running through my head for a smoker ill try my best to draw a picture of it and try to explain it better.

Sorry to hijack another thread but I am new here as well. I have been smoking meat, poultry, fish for several years now but always looking for advice and tricks of the trade. I make my own jerky and sausages using beef, pork and venison as well as vegies and beans. I have a vertical Brinkman electric smoker but also use my charcoal weber grill. I have been told my smoked ribs are awesome as well as my pulled pork. But like I said, I am always looking to get better.Spring is not too far away so I will be posting pictures. I do have some right now and will post them soon.
