He's right. Almost makes me want to cry. When I started making brisket, 15 years ago or so, I could get a packer for $45 easily.
When I first started learning how to cook brisket. I was paying 20 to 40 for select.

Same and next thing I knew we were pushing $100. Then I went to Frisco for NDSU vs JMU #2 and ar inedible of the grocery stores they had Prime Packers for $45 and I was getting Choice for $80-100 in ND. I should have went and bought a cooler and loaded up for the drive home

With beef production at a 75 yr low (this alone will take many years to correct) and diesel now above $6/gal in some areas, full packer pricing will continue to increase. While we can expect fuel pricing to subside after a while, resolving the beef supply is going to be a very large mountain to climb. A number of cattle ranchers have left the market. Today, the start up costs and time for setting up a viable and sustainable herd is enormous. For those still in the business getting their cattle processed within a specific timeframe window (very important) is a problem because the number of volume meat processors has also dropped. There are many fingers to point at causes but in the end, here we are.
Wrong thread I know, but I passed my local Pacific Pride station as I do every morning; today diesel was $7.29 a gallon.

Went to a local bbq joint a few weeks ago. The brisket on the sampler platter was a $3.00 upcharge. I ordered it and it was the smallest piece of meat I've seen since I was at a White Castle. Sad.

Shoooooot..... when I started smoking briskets they could be had for $.79/lb. I was hot when they went to $.99/lb
The biggest one in the case would run 15 bucks. They were .99/lb up until about 2015 if I recall correctly, maybe even 2017 or 2018.
F$$k FoodTV and those cursed BBQ shows for causing prices to spike!
No, I'm actually being serious on that (for once). I truly attribute those BBQ comp shows for driving up the cost of brisket by showing all of America that is was so crazy good. They went from being available in every grocery store to damn near Walmart only (we didn't have Sam's until probably 2015) sometime before 2015. Before those comp shows, you just asked the guy behind the counter to show you what he had then you picked out what you wanted. Since before even the 'rona, it's been "what you see is what we got. man"
I miss being able to buy 2 and have enough ground beef and pot roast and stew meat for a whole month for 35-40 bucks out of those pieces of beef. Chuck was 3x the price back then. Just 10-12 years ago that was.

Same with Skirt Steak, Tri Tip, etc. Granted those shows also helped to get me into doing more elaborate BBQ projects at the time. Gave me something to do while taking my shift staying home with sick little kids.

I read an article a couple of days ago, where a pitmaster has stopped offering brisket at his restaurant, and now offers beef cheeks in its place. HEB sells them at $4.76 a pound. I wonder how long they will stay that price?

The price for regular gas is actually about 15 cents less than most places around here. I filled up at Costco last night for $5.19.
