I've always been sort of ambivalent on the subject of ghosts. Not what you'd call a believer, but never ruled out the idea. We've lived here for about 15 years, and odd things have always happened. Mostly things disappearing and reappearing in an obvious place after a thorough search. Also things sometimes fall off shelves in the kitchen for no apparent reason. Once a #2 pencil was sitting in the middle of the kitchen counter when I got up in the morning. It was obviously very old. Since we normally don't use pencils or have them laying around, I asked my wife about it and she said she'd never seen it before. Another time, again first thing in the morning, a 6oz. bottle of regular Coke was sitting on the counter. Again I asked my wife, as neither of us drinks coke. Again, she had no idea. Knives also seem to disappear and reappear quite regularly. The latest was a bottle of citrus spice rub. I'd actually posted on here about it a couple months ago, as I had not realized it was salt free and couldn't figure out why the chicken tasted flat. I looked at the bottle the next morning, then later that day I went to show it to my wife and couldn't find it. Pretty much dismantled the kitchen and finally decided I'd accidentally dropped it in the trash or something. Then last night I opened the cabinet above the stove and there it was at the very front edge in the middle. Now I get stuff out of that cabinet on a daily basis. The way the bottle was sitting, I'd have knocked it over reaching in for something else. So for a month and a half, I'd have had to not notice a bottle sitting smack dab in the middle of the cabinet where I keep my flour, sugar, cornmeal etc... Again, my wife has no idea about it.

It's actually an apartment, built in the early 60's. My wife was here for about 5 years before I came along, and all we know is that the former resident was a military veteran who had also lived here for a long time. We still occasionally get letters from the VA addressed to him.

Man that creeps me out. I should not have read your post to the end. I will not be attending any dinner parties at your house.

Haha!! Sorry. He or she doesn't seem to be angry or hateful in any way, just keeps borrowing my stuff. Kinda like any room mate, just can't see this one.

Does your building have a Super, or anyone else who could have access to a building master key? This sounds a little like someone who has access to your apartment, without your knowledge, who is helping themselves to your stuff when you're not home.

Might be other sensible explanations...but that's the one that immediately comes to mind...

Only way to rule out a human intruder would be a nanny cam type device. Inexpensive and if it is said super would prove a legal issue if need be. But as you said pencil appeared overnight while you where sleeping and objects fall off shelf, that would rule out human intervention. Did the vet pass in the apartment or previous renter pass there?

Seriously don't think it's a person coming in. Most times an object will go missing then reappear within the space of a few minutes while we're here. Besides, nothing valuable has ever disappeared, and the stuff always is found.
I wouldn't rule out a friend doing it as a joke, but like I said it's usually while we're home. Besides, to carry on a joke for 15 years would be....well it would be pretty awesome actually!
I don't have any idea if a previous resident passed in the apartment. And it's been so long now there likely would be no way of finding out.

Even if you've been married for decades, do you really (I mean REALLY) know your spouse? Could be she accidentally started it by placing/misplacing something, and got a reaction from you which she secretly thought was funny, and has been pulling innocent little pranks ever since. Which would make a nanny cam useless because she'd know it was there. It would also explain why nothing of value ever turned up missing, which might prompt you to want to call the police, forcing her to expose her mischief.

That could very well be the case, I've been tricking my wife for years! "Honey, I don't know how the toilet seat was left up!" "Dear, but I always squeeze the toothpaste from the bottom of the tube! maybe it was the cat!?"

The Ghost is probably waiting on you to offer up some BBQ

Last year I was cooking some bacon outside on the side burner of my grill and when I went to check on it... it was gone. I have a privacy wall with a locking gate on the deck so no one could have entered, my wife and daughter were in the kitchen and they didn't touch it or see anything. No animal that I know would go into a hot frying pan, but the again it is bacon!

I believe in "ghosts". Now, I can't EXACTLY identify what a "ghost" is. I think its possible they come in different forms. I also think about 95% of what people think are ghosts, aren't. I'm not trying to tell ANYONE their "ghost story" isn't true.

Hey , he lives in D.C. , what else would you expect than some long dead Senator is trying to scare up some votes
