My son is 8 years old.  He has a bb gun for 2 years now.

Last night he wanted to shoot his bb gun.  So we did, thing isnt accurate at all.   So I went and got my .17 hmr.   At 20 yards he put 5 shots into a 2x2 group.   Pretty good for first time shooting a real gun.    But it doesnt fit him.

So my question is whats a good youth model gun?   I have top end guns down to low end stuff.   I am thinking a .223 would be a good caliper.

Let me know.

Thanks.

Why not just put a scope on the BB gun?

Accuracy wasn't the main concern Richie...gun didn't fit him
"   So I went and got my .17 hmr. " Chad sorry as Adam said it was his gun did not fit the lad.The BB gun is not accurate

In a .223 I would go to a gun shop and see how a Ruger Mini-14 fits him. Great rifle for adults but frame is short and the stock somewhat is also. What is nice is this rifle is so popular their are many after market sticks available for it that if the factory stock does not work you can pick up a temporary stock at competitive prices.

Sorry Richie, I should have said I am getting him ready to hunt next year.

Ruger 10-22. My 10 yr old started shooting it last year and he is dead on accurate with it.

He doesn't like it since I put the scope on it. So he will be getting one for Christmas. Composite stock stainless of course per his request!

Adam you could wait and see how much he grows,or find a way to modify your gun stock.

wish I was more into gun hunting, Jersey is shotgun only.

Ok. I should have posted better. I need a bolt or pump action in a .223 or similar caliper to hunt with next year.

Thanks for the comments so far.

I could but why not buy new. I love adding to my collection. I have a youth model .243 wssm but I can't find ammo for it. Believe it or not it's a fairly new gun.

Get him the 10-22 to practice with and then move him up. It's a great starter gun and he will be able to take it with him as he gets older. It's a fantastic gun for popping rock chucks in the fields. That's how I learned when I was young. Our parents dropped us off we got a 500 round box of ammo from the ranchers and brought back our rock chucks at the end of the day. Good times!

Adam, I think Case is on the right track. The 10-22 is a good practice weapon. When he starts to hunt, get him a youth model .410 in either pump or double barrel.

It's a .22 thou.

Yes it is. One of the best trainer guns around for getting kids excited about shooting, learning the rules, easy to clean, etc..

They do make bolt action ones if you really want to go that route.

It's a cheap investment that will last him a lifetime.

X3 or x4 on the Ruger 10/22.  Nothing wrong with starting into hunting small game with a .22LR.   And it's a gun he will likely own the rest of his life.  I still have the one I bought with the money from my first working summer while school was out (way back when the 10/22 first came out and when dinosaurs roamed the open plains).   No you can't hunt deer with a 22LR, but you can teach a lot of accuracy skills with a very inexpensive cartridge and still start to move into hunting small game.  This also gives chance to teach field dressing and food prep of the harvested meat for the table.  Then move him up to a center fire rifle once he has shown the skills and continued interest.   And if he tires of the 10/22 they hold their resale value like gold.
