I made this for a friend of mine. Anyone know what they would use it for?
Nice handy work! What's the handle made out of?
I suspected antler, but wasn't sure what the wood was. It's a trussing needle for adding string through meat. Like I did here.
The handle is Madagascar ebony and elk antler.
The next batch of these will be made from stainless. I made this one to recreate how we made them when I was a kid. Except the handle, as a kid the handle was usually part of an old broom or mop handle.
Ok now that the cat is out of the bag, the one I made was used primarily to stitch pork loins together to make Crown Roast. He wanted it a bit longer, so I used a 12 inch length of 303 stainless steel. Cross drilled a hole about 1 1/2 inches from a lathe sharpened end and set into a file handle. I guess the needle was about 9 inches not including the handle when done.
Very nice job on the ebony and antler handle. Alot nicer than my wooden file handle.
Dang, I was going to guess prison shank!! That's a really clever idea though, I haven't seen that before! Love the handle!
