i am crunched on time my smoke went way longer then expected. so does a butt need to rest at all before pulling it apart?

From your post time, I'd say start pulling it...45 minutes is better than no rest at all. It may not pull quite as easy, but if it was tender coming out of the smoker, it should pull OK.
