How long can you store garlic???

I have been keeping garlic in the fridge in a container. The question I have is how long does it last? It seems that if it gets to be a couple weeks old It starts to grow roots so to speak, And it gets a green vane running through the center of the clove. Is it still safe to use?,What can I do to store it and have it last longer?
