Hey there everyone. First timer here from the Hudson Valley of NY. I just found a WSM 18.5 on Craigslist for $150 and I am driving 90 minutes to go pick it up in Connecticut tomorrow! I plan on trying a pork butt for my first smoke. Anyone want to suggest some woods for my first smoke?!

Pat, welcome to SMF and congrats on the WSM score!  Pork butt is a good first choice.  So forgiving.

Woods for the butt?  Just about everything works, just depends on your tastes and preferences.  Some prefer with milder fruit woods with pork.  Personally, I like strong woods, like hickory and mesquite (an acquired taste).  Oak works beautifully too, a little milder than hickory.  The pork don't care.  It likes it all.

I used to try a lot of different woods, but now pretty much stick to hickory, cherry, and oak.  Whatever you choose, you'll love it!

Have fun becoming a member of the WSM nation!

Welcome to the forum....and congratulations on your new smoker!!

You can add pecan to the list along with cherry, apple. For pork, I like cherry with some hickory mixed in.
