Hello SMF.

I've been smoking for about a year or two, and I'm greatly indebted to SMF for all the knowledge I've been able to gather thus far.  I've got to say that this is one of the most friendly online communities I've encountered.

Anyway, it all started about two years ago when I moved into a new house in Colorado and bought a gas grill.  I grilled about 4 or 5 days a week, and one day picked up a stainless wood chip box and used that for smoking inside the grill.  It was a lot of babysitting and beer drinking, but I had enough success that I was hooked.

I bought a Masterbuilt XL propane smoker from BassPro and smoked every chance I got.  Of course I replaced the wood chip pan with a cast iron skillet and the water pan with a full-sized hotel pan (thanks to the helpful information I found here).  I had pretty good luck for a newbie, I think. I've done quite a few port shoulders and briskets as well as some poultry.  I've been responsible for a a few poor performances, but most smokes have turned out well.

Then I moved back to Missouri, and my smoker was damaged by the moving company, so I have been suffering withdrawals for a few months.  Right now, I'm adding a modulating thermostat from a gas range, and I've also ordered an AMNPS from Todd so that hopefully I won't have to jack around with adding wood chunks all the time.

I usually go by hambone or bone, but both of those were taken, so smokinhambone will have to do.

Hi Hambone!

to SMF!!! We're happy you found us!

You might want to reconsider the AMNPS, they don't work very well in propane smokers but the Tube (AMNTS) has been showing really good results. You might want to give Todd a call and see what he thinks, I bet he will trade it out if need be.

Thanks for the heads-up, Dave.  I just sent Todd an email to get his opinion.

I've been researching this for a few months on SMF and elsewhere, and it seemed like the consensus seemed to be in favor of the AMNPS for its versatility and longer burn times.  I'd also considered mounting a box to the side for whichever model I go with.

Thanks again.

If you're considering an external box for the AMNPS that will work. Here is what I did to my GOSM propane to make it work and it works great:

It's not real pretty but it does work. I've seen others use mailboxes and they work too.

If the Tube had been out before I modded mine I probably would have gone that route but I do like that the AMNPS will go 10 hours and the large Tube only goes about 6 hours.

That is just my opinion and right now if I were you I would wait and talk to Todd before i did anything. He is the expert and knows my mod and everyone else's on here so he will give you the best advice.

Keep us posted and i know you will come up with the best thing that will work for you.

Todd agreed that the tube would be better for my smoker, and he's already corrected my order.

I still might add an external firebox later on, but I'm getting pretty anxious to stop tinkering and start smoking some meat.

Cheers,
