Hello all,

My name is Keith and currently live in Dunwoody (North Atlanta) but from Laurinburg NC. I've cooked several whole chickens, ribs, and pork shoulders on a Weber gas grill which have turned out well.  Smoke is the missing ingredient so I'm making the plunge and buying a smoker.  I will buy the Weber Smokey Mountain smoker (18.5" or 22") as I not only want to start smoking but I want to move away from gas for the purpose of smoking meat.  I'd also like to start smoking other things such as sausages and beef jerky.

Thanks in advance for all the advice and tips.

Welcome Kieth. I think most would go for the 22.5 WSM. You may not think you need that large of a smoker now, but, you will!  Welcome to your new addiction!

Hi Keith, and it's good always to see another Atlantian in the forum (I'm in McDonough). There are quite a few in here now.

As to the WSM, I would go with the 22.5" model.  When I bought my 18.5" WSM, that was all they made.  They are both great smokers and will last for years (mine going on 9 years now), but the extra grate size of the 22.5" is a big plus especially when doing ribs.  If I was doing it over again I would go with the 22.5", but I can't justify the expense for a 2nd WSM just to get that extra size since I already own a 18.5".  Like So MS Smoker said, I would go with the bigger one even if you "think" you don't need the extra room - you will eventually.

Either way, a WSM is a great smoker.
