how do you clean your grills? I clean mine with brush and scraper and then wash with dawn detergent. Anyone used oven cleaners?

Any advice appreciated, pete

I just scrape the residue off as good as possible and then burn off next cook. I would never use oven cleaner and I also avoid metal bristle brushes. They can be very dangerous. Around me it's popular to scrape then wipe down the hot grates with a half onion too. They even make holders for the onion

I ball up a handful of aluminum foil and use tongs to scrape the hot grate , then toss it .

I've used a number of methods over the years, including some mentioned here. Foil can work well, I like the onion. Recently I have used a wet cotton towel in combination with a scour pad, that does a dandy job. Once or twice a year I'll pull them out and hit them with the power washer.

What style of grates are you cleaning?
My personal equipment all have the round wire grates (Weber grills & MB pellet pooper). They clean easily with the scraper side of the 99¢ bristle brush from Walmart. Just have to scrape both sides and burn off the remainder. I also use the bristle side on a COLD rack.

The gas grills here are cast iron grates and common use. They are hard to clean and heaven forbid anyone (else) lift them and scrape the bottom.
The unit Up_In_Smoke Up_In_Smoke posted would be great.

I scrape mine with a brass grill brush then use high heat for 15 min or so to burn off any residue and brush again to clear any ash residue. Foil works well also. I will have to try the onion method. Thanks for posting.

I do that on my glass top range in the kitchen if something gets burnt on a burner .
As it cools down , just enough to steam the junk off . Not screaming hot .
Works good .
I agree, wet soaking while warm works well for glass cooktops. For lumps a razor blade glass scraper works well for a start while "steaming" then polish down with Bar Keepers Friend on a wet paper towel after most has been cleaned has been a mainstay for years also.

I scrape the sides and bottom with a putty knife and then use hot water and dawn to clean it. I have stainless steel rod grates in two of my grills and use this. It works really well and has two different size hooks for the rods. Can clean all around without removing them. For my expanded metal grate on the stick burner i use a wire brush and then steam it and brush again.

I was interested in picking up a scrub daddy however alot of the reviews claim they fall apart have a few uses. Can anyone who owns one of these confirm or deny those reviews
Thanks

I only use this once or twice a year but when I want to deep clean my grills I remove them from the BBQ/smoker and spray them down with goo-gone. I let it sit for a few minutes then scrub them with a brush as I hose them down. Nothing I have tried has worked as well as this has.
