I have had lots of fun on my GOSM.  We modified it to cut a door/flap in the back to give me access to the woodchip box so I don't have to open the front door and lose all the heat.  That's been pretty effective, but when it gets cold, the propane fired unit really suffers.  today I could not get it above 180 and that's not a good idea with turkeys (two 14 lb birds, never got above 110 degrees)

In Northern MN, it was a very nice day, thot GOSM would be OK, but the temp about low to mid 40's and that makes it hard to get the box warm enough

So, now what?  I don't think I want an electric, seems those really don't get the smoky taste and the offset box looks like the real deal. My buddy who used a welder to cut my GOSM to modify it, is willing to help build one.  Seems for the price, that would be the way to go as I can't justify paying nearly a $1,000 or +++ for those championship smokers I see advertised.

I do think charcoal and/or lump is going to be more of the real smoking experience.  Will a 55 gal drum also have trouble w/ getting warm enough in the winter?  I don't think I'd go out to smoke if it was colder than 20-25 degrees, but with 5 months of winter here, a man's gotta eat!    The GOSM has done fabulous ribs, butts, turkeys (on 50+ degree days), briskets, etc.  So, just ready to see what my next options, I'd like to keep the budget at $200-400 max.

Suggestions, thoughts?  Thanks for any input.

Hello and welcome to SMF! Glad to have you with us!

Wrap a welding blanket around it and block any wind with plywood etc (shelter it and make it cozy)!

Now I'll let you know, being the owner of an electric (MES 40), I turn out some Q that would rival yours in the smokiness department!!!! So don't knock the electrics til you try it. I'm in Colorado at 8700 feet and I smoke year round.

Would you mind updating your profile to include your location? Thanks!
