Ok my family at SMF I have me a problem. Now to some this is no big deal but to me it's my biggest fear. My boss wants to fly my from NY to SC to take care of some of the sales for his business. I have a big fear of flying. I have to leave thursday and I am freaking out. My wife keeps saying it fine you are safer in a plane than a car. Well I beg to differ if my motor stops I can pull over. At 30k feet there is no pulling over. And I don't like closed in places.

Well thanks for letting me vent.

Do you know what kind (size) plane you will be on? Some planes can get kind of small  but some are really big as well. It isn't as small as being in a vehicle but I know what you mean how it can feel like you are crammed in there. Try to get an isle seat in the exit row that will get you some more room and should help you with feeling so claustrophobic. Nothing we say will probably ease your fear but once you go through with it I believe you will feel a better  and hopefully your fears well be eased a bit.

i coulndn't agree more   flying is no picnic   have nightmares about being stuck an the tarmac for hours while somone else controls my fate  leave a day early and drive!

Don't think it's going to make much difference, but here it goes. I agree with your wife. I also can see your point of view. When I was in the service I flew allot, and have flown  since. The planes go threw a very tight check mandated by the FAA, every thing is checked and rechecked. As to the tight quarters get an isle seat preferably on an exit row, wider space between seats. Take a shot or two of Jack black or your drink of choice before the flight to help settle your nerves. Have you talked to your boss about your fear of flying, he may let you travel a different way.

A couple a shots of your favorite adult beverage might help.

a valium would help more. but not both at the same time

Thanks guys this did help thank you.

He didn't really no about my fear of flying and the tickets are already paid for. One part of me says dave font be a puss and get the hell over it and the other part says hell no don't get on.

Thank you all agin for letting me vent.

Put your big boy drawers on and Fly.  LOL    Seriously, it's great to be up there among the clouds.  take some chewing gum for your ears and  You will be fine.

I'm glad I don't have to worry about flying for work.  With the deviants in the TSA, I won't fly anywhere until some of our rights are restored.  no way in hell some dirt bag is gonna grope me, or my family.  Period.

Take the valium then it will be a no brainer...everything will be cool...thats what my x wife does and she is scared to death of flying..and it works for her it will work for anybody...I have flown thousands of times and lucky I never had a problem with it.. Flew across the Pacific Ocean one time in a twin engine aircraft had to stop at every island we came cross  to refuel..31 hours air time...

I used to work for Northrop, Boeing, Douglas and some contractor work for Lockheed

Always sit forward of the wings.

I am scared of heights and roller coasters,  but I really love flying, sounds weird I know. The take off and landing are the best parts. The worst part to me would be going through security.  Get a window seat and enjoy.  Have a drink it will help relax.

By the time you get back you'll be wondering what all of the anxiety was for.

I logged over a million miles for work over the years - just get a good book on tape and listen to it to take your mind off what you are doing and you will be fine

@Steve, I take it you do not fly as I have never been groped by a TSA agent.  OP, Go to the airport early so you do not have to worry about getting through security.  Make it an hour and a half and you can be relaxed and watch the people.  Get on the plane and before you know it you wil be there.  My wife used to hate to fly and was white knuckled every time we went somewhere.  She likes to travel and with time she is now a pro at it.  You will be fine.
