Chaps,

I'm after a little local knowledge if possible, a colleague of mine is going to be working in Washington DC for a few weeks. He'd like an electric smoker to bring/ship back to the UK as choices are very limited over here and costs are substantially higher. Could anyone advise of any stores in the area that stock smokers? I think he will be without a car so anywhere central would be great if possible.

Thanks in advance

Jonty

In his type of situation, i beleive ordering off the internet probably would be the easiest. What type of smoker is he thinking of, a master built, pellet grill?

Hi smoking13, thanks for your reply. He's after something along the lines of the masterbuilt cabinets. Past experience of ordering over the Internet for shipping to the uk leads itself to quite a lot of expense and import duties etc, hence the wish to buy direct and bring it back

I mean for him to order off-line while he's state side, have it delivered to the place he's staying at for a couple weeks then just fly it back with him when he returns to the uk.

I know in my area the only places that carry masterbuilts or that type of smokers are the big-box stores, homedepot, lowes, basspro cabelas etc. I'm just north of D.C. in Pa and all the local shops near by only carry pellet grills or what I'd call larger size smokers... walmart or dickssportinggoods might also have some but without a car it'd be kinda hard

Electricity requirements are different for the UK than for the US. There are four differences between using US appliances in the UK : the voltage ( US = 120V, UK = 240V ), the number of watts the product draws (different for each product), the frequency ( US = 60 Hz, UK = 50 Hz ), and the plug on the power cord. In order to convert, you must use a transformer to step the voltage down from 240 to 120v and change the plug or use an adapter.

Ahh, I see, thanks for the info, much appreciated.

I tend to agree with Smokinq13. Finding best price the simplest way would be to search the big box stores. Having it delivered directly to his place of lodging would also be good, then just take it back with him. He can do a Google search to find the stores that carry what he wants, then compare to get the best price. So, that means it would be important to do this early in his stay to ensure it arrives before be has to hand home. It generally seems to take about a week for delivery here in the US.

It is also important that he become familiar with the 3 generations available when looking at the Masterbuilt line of electric smokers. Generation 2 should be avoided because of all the issues it has had. Generation 1 was considered good and the newer Generation 2.5 is supposed to incorporate the fixes for Gen 2. If the unit is Bluetooth capable, it is Gen 2.5.

Braz brings up a good point with the differences is power needs.

^^^^ What this guy said!!!

Now if your UK buddy is all ready to handle what Braz Braz mentions then I would say his best bet for a Masterbuilt is to find an Academy Sports and Outdoor store. They seem to always carry MES smokers and there are a lot more Academy stores out there (at least in my neck of the woods) than the bigger/better sporting and outdoor stores like Cabelas or Bass Pro shop.
