We only have 15 chickens left after someones roaming dogs got into the run last month and killed 19

I am not a fan of HOA's, for this reason and many more and refuse to live anywhere that has one.

We never get eggs this time of year...but the weather has been so mild this winter, we've been getting a couple a day. Just starting this week.

Yesterday around 5p my wife said hey there is a skunk out by the chicken run.

"BANG"
Not anymore.

Still nobody has come forward who owns the killer dogs.
Was looking at chics today at Rural King. Looking like $150 to replace my chickens.

If the dogs come back that will give me a good reason to break out the 22mag.
(But only if they go after the chickens again)

Rick, I'm a dog lover but if they are killing your chickens then it's adios for them. Too bad for the dogs as their owner sounds like they're the ones who could use some rock salt ..

Don't know if this is everywhere. But in Colorado if a dog or anything for that matter, is harassing your livestock, you are 100% legal to shoot it. Except wolves, they have to be actively attacking. I don't understand that one.

Glad your hens are laying again Rick, shitty when people get puppies that are so adorable… not that grown ones aren’t if you love them. But some just get for the puppy faze, don’t teach them and they (the dogs) end up paying the price.

Good question John! My question back… not to you but just in general. When aren’t wolves attacking? They are just roaming, killing machines… they kill just to kill.

I have a theory I think is behind it, but will not discuss here.

• Liability: Kentucky is a "strict liability" state for dog owners, meaning owners are liable for damage caused by their dogs to property, including livestock and poultry.
• Animal Control Actions: Dogs known to have killed poultry may be designated as dangerous, and authorities may order them to be confined, quarantined, or destroyed.
• Negligence: If a neighbor's dog kills your chickens, you should contact local animal control, as the dog owner is responsible for the loss

Kentucky Law regarding DOGS:
Under Section 258.235, any person may kill or seize any dog which he sees in the act of pursuing or wounding any livestock, or wounding or killing poultry, or attacking human beings, whether or not such dog bears the license tag required by the provisions of this chapter. There shall be no liability on such person in damages or otherwise for killing, injuring from an attempt to kill, or for seizing the dog. That same section also comprises the state's new strict liability law for dog bites.
Under Sec. 235(4), any owner whose dog is found to have caused damage to a person, livestock, or other property shall be responsible for that damage.

Agree Rich, but dogs are decendants of them. Wolves are extremely smart! Dogs are also smart and trainable if the owner is involved. I will say, our pit/heeler rescue dog could ruin someone’s day quick… if he was ever pissed… which he is not of that demeanor… he actually even though was abused… very friendly! But as responsible owners… we have worked with him and he responds very well to verbal communication. He knows when we speak, he listens.

They are for sure, in some cases its not always the wolves. DOW found in some cases Mountain Lions killing cattle and leaving it for wolves, they believe to keep the wolves from tracking them. But there are alot of ranchers that are unhappy about the reintroduction of wolves here, because they are so destructive.

Wolves kill for sport, lions stalk their prey and take them out… Coyotes are more scavengers… but will take a deer fawn or elk calf before you can blink.

But I think it shows how smart those cats are. And they are smart. Pretty impressive animal.

Damn, seems if it’s not one predator after your birds… it another. Good luck Rick… skunks are a PITA.
