OC for now
Hi everyone,

I've been a member at other bbq forums and have been a long time lurker here.  I was raised in Seattle where we don't have any good bbq and my parents weren't a big fan so I was never really big in to it, but my favorite McD chicken McNugget dipping sauce was and always will be bbq!  I did a lot of traveling for work after college (go UW!) and it put me in places in the south, TX, GA, AL, MS, TN and etc.  So I made it a goal of mine to visit bbq restaurants in the cities that I was in and became a bbq snob.  When I moved back to Seattle after living here and there, I realized there weren't any good bbq places!  So I did what every one of us here did, I started to smoke!  I bought a WSM and loved it.  I was inspired by Rendezvous founder, Charles Vergos who was a greek immigrant and asked myself, why couldn't an asian immigrant bbq using some of our own spices?!?!  So that's when I really got in to it, made my own special rubs and sauces.  I was dedicated, waking up at 3am so that I can feed bbq for family and friends.

Fast foward several years, I got married and moved down to OC in an apartment.  I sold my WSM (truly sad) and been just grilling on a weber q grill off my patio.  We're moving in next week to a condo/townhouse and just purchased a 30inch S/S Masterbuilt Electric Smoker (MES).  Found a brand new one off of craigslist for $125!  Placing an order for an AMNPS today so that my smoker will be ready to rock when we move.  I'm actually sort of stressed out trying to figure out where the optimal location for my smoker in the new condo!  Plan to do some jerky, ribs, tri-tip, brisket and my favorite, pork shoulders.  I know I've sort of crossed that line of bbq taboos but I'm married, work full time, go to school part time, soon to be AF reservist, volunteer half of my sunday at church, and have a baby on the way.  I think that deserves some sort of pardon!  Hopefully, when I get older I'll be able to go back to a WSM

My fave I think is still Rendezvous.  Been many places but I just love their ribs and the kick that their bbq hot sauce provides.  I was once in Biloxi, MS a month before Katrina, and I felt like eating some ribs and made the drive up to Memphis.  Was totally worth it!  Of course I couldn't just eat at Rendezvous, so stopped by Porky's and McNeelys as well and had some on the way back and next morning.  Also, I went to Jim N Nicks in Montgomery, AL and couldn't decide what I wanted to eat so I decided to get the family platter that feeds 3 - 4 thinking I'll just eat leftovers.  After about an hour everything was eaten, meat and side dishes!!

Okay enough, look forward to learning from everyone here and adding lots of pictures of delicious bbq!!

Welcome, kumatae! I grew up in Seattle also, so I know what you mean about the lack of good bbq.

Again, no need to feel bad about going electric. I did also. Not all of us have the time to tend a fire.
