The DCM debate is a rabbit hole I have stop reading about…. Vets are not really taking a stand, but they do say “good grains” are good. No corn And less BS.

we rotate the protein of the Ancient grains TOTW. There are 4 different ones, so we rotate those, or whatever they have in stock when we go for a buy.
I need to stop worrying about DCM, as well. I tried switching between the Ancient Grains, but our old dog Bailey, didn't really like Ancient Stream. But he loves the Prairie and the Mountain so that's what I buy now.

In addition to the kibble and my homemade, every morning they each get a piece of raw beef liver, about ¼ of a slice each...

My golden retreiver Halely went through a pretty rough time a few months ago. Ended up being a change up of what I fed her. Vet said some dogs have cast iron stomachs and can eat pretty much anything and some cannot. Got her back on her regular diet and she seems to be fine now. Made a lot of rice with boiled chicken breast and ground beef with a pumpkin in a can made for dogs to settle their guts.
Damn dog was eating better then I was but it did the trick.
My other golden retriever Oakley can eat a freight train and never have a problem.
You just need to adjust their diets to what works.

a dog with a sensitive stomach has gotta be a challenge.

our to Labs will eat anything and everything, changing foods doesn’t effect them. So far - they scarf What ever we put out and love it with no issues. Got lucky there I suppose.

We had a Weimaraner that lived to 15 years. The last couple years of her life she would stop eating the kibble at times. My wife would make here rice with boiled chicken breasts and mix in canned pumpkin. Sounded absolutely crazy to me at first but it worked every time. After a few days she would start eating her kibble again. I'm convinced that concoction added a couple of years to her life.

Well we lost our lab 1 month ago, he had some type of heart problem and he went quickly, we fed him the grain free for maybe 4 years, when the vet recommended to stop we did, maybe not soon enough, he would have been 10 in may, smartest dog I ever had, we still have a 2 year old beagle we love but the lab Savage was another child. Ranger and I have become closer and will be our last dog.

As Winterrider Winterrider said, her teeth may be getting sensitive or even has lost a bunch. My oldest dog is a Cocker and he's almost 9. Earlier this year he got where he wouldn't eat much so I carried him to my vet for a checkup. The vet said he had some bad teeth and pulled them. WOW, what a difference that made in him and his whole demeanor. He was almost like a puppy again. Years ago I had a dog who had lost many of her teeth so I supplemented her dry food with a quality canned food. I would always wet her dry food with water or broth and allow it to get soft before feeding her. A little bacon grease on their food also will help them with their appetite as long as there's nothing else going on.

Buying quality canned food started me down a path towards making my own for 2 reasons. One was, as @hillbillyrkstr said, I know what's in it and the other was to save money. I still make my own "wet" dogfood and have been for maybe 10 years. My recipe makes about 10 quarts, lasts me about 6 weeks, and it works for my current dogs as well as past dogs, they've all seemed to like it.

Edit to add that I'm very particular about the dogfood that I feed my dogs. My resource for dogfood recommendations is can dog eat haggis. It's very informative and may surprise some folks with the recommendations on what many think is "good" dogfood. a quick check and Orijen Senior has a 5 star rating, their highest rating...
like some advice regarding which brand of dog food to feed my 1.5 year old standard schnauzer The vet has advised I switch brands and suggested a few different brands such as Hill’s or royal canin but would like to hear what you think Thank you Top

I believe vets try to stear you towards products that they carry. They get a cut from it. I give my dog what I can afford and she likes. I also give her a dry and a wet combination. twice a day. Works out to about 150 bucks a month. One bag of her dry is 80 bucks and the wet about 60 bucks a month. Treats on top of that and her food tops mine. I'm lucky to get ice cream once a month.

Taste of Wild here. Neighbor does the Royal Canine as they have had some sensitivity issues with a couple of their dogs.

Taste of the wild ancient grains, mixed with green beans, raw eggs and premium cooked dog food As alternating add in to the kibble

Is there anything we won't do for our pets? Try giving the pup my mom's leftover from when she cooks. Someone has to appreciate her cooking. None of us kids did 🤣. Why I come here to learn more about good cooking. I hope your puppy (always a puppy to us no matter the age) starts eating again.

My wife works at an animal hospital and is the dietary specialist. She said both brands recommended were top choices, she also said for the breed and size of your dog (barring any allergies) adult large breed would be the correct food. She also mentioned that if cost was an issue to look at Purina Pro Plan large breed. For Purina's Pro Plan grade the quality control level is the same as human food and their prescription foods are at a medical grade level. Lastly she said buy your food from Chewy enroll in the auto-ship will save some money also.

My 5yo Golden Retriever is now eating

Jinx Salmon, Sweet Potato & Carrot Dry Dog Food, Grain Free

It is grain free but we made the change since he has had skin conditions since he was a puppy. The amount of steroids and other shots he has had to take the last few years was too much. Even with allergy testing it never was solved. He has eaten many expensive foods but this one finally seems to have solved his skin condition.

It is supplemented with 1/3 of a can of wet food and Blue Buffalo treats.

Our Cocker Spaniel puppy gets Blue Buffalo puppy kibble three times and a small amount of Blue Buffalo canned food once a day.

Both pups gulp down their food every day. We do separate them when feeding to avoid any fighting.

We never give either of them any "people food". They still beg though.

I been feeding my Golden this dry for some time now. Anything that is not grain free she gets the runs. I also give her FreshPet slice and serve mixed in with the dry. Sprinkle in some Flax Seed with her food once a day. Anti-inflammatory properties of flaxseed can help ease symptoms of arthritis, lower blood pressure, improve kidney function, and maintain healthy skin and coat in dogs. You can incorporate chopped or ground seeds or a small amount of free oil into your dog's regular food to promote optimal health.

Hill's science diet is good food . Most Vets will carry it , because ,, it's good food .
That's what I feed my Cattle dog .
Another thing is you need to know is the needs of your dog , and how much to feed daily .
Don't go by " Adult 40 pounds 2 cups a day " Go by how many calories the dog should intake , and how many calories are in a cup of the food you're feeding them .
If your Vet is recommending a food change , there is a reason for it , and I doubt that it's because he or she is getting a cut from the dog food company . If it is , change Vets .
The vet should have looked up , in your case Standard Schnauzer and told you the calorie intake for the breed . Then based on the food type how much to feed them .
