Been too hot outside to do much cooking . So I've been hanging out in the shop . This is an old Norm Abrams / New Yankee Workshop project .
I did one 30 plus years ago , and have been wanting to revisit it .
I had some hard Maple in the basement , so that's what I used .
First thing is bending the rail . I had some older sheets of underlayment that have a maple veneer on one side .
So I cut that into strips and bent that around a jig I built .
I strapped it all up dry to help start the bend .
Then glued it up and formed the rail .

Out of the jig . Came out OK ,, left side is good , right side cracked in the middle core .
Has a flat spot in it .

Just gonna roll with it . Leg blanks glued up .
Parts for the top , and the rail .

Did the math / layout for the top . That way I don't have a bunch of waste .
4 pieces in the top .
20250618_114357.jpg
Added a hardwood strip to my circle jig and swung the top .

Size the rails ,
20250627_120352.jpg
Cut the tapper on the legs . You have to tape the off fall back on to keep a flat
surface for ripping more than 2 sides .
20250628_131330.jpg
Looks about right .
20250628_131709.jpg
Back rail , and rear leg assembly .
20250702_101334.jpg
Made a stretcher to hold the front leg , and attach the top .
20250702_113507.jpg
All put together . Trim piece added to the bottom of the rail .
Has to have the trim or it doesn't look right .

1st coat of 3 coats of Danish oil .

20250707_085954.jpg
Finished off with " warm satin " Top joined up pretty good .
4 sections in that .

This is the original one I did 30 years ago .

New meets old . Came out OK . Radius of the rail is off .
It works though .

Just something to look at . I already have another one in the works .
That rail being off ,,, bugs me , so I did another one .
Anyway , just something to look at .

I run into him on occasion at the seafood shop down the road. Not the friendliest guy in the world but then again I don't blame him as he probably just wants to be left alone.
That's cool . Yeah , I think he's not really a people person . I bet he gets swarmed when he goes somewhere . I've made a few of his projects . Have several of the books .

Very nice, excellent work.
Sometimes making a jig can take longer than the time it takes to make the project once you have the jig.

Some times I find it more enjoyable making the jigs, rather than getting around to being productive and actually producing a finished result. :emoji_grinning:

Very nice, excellent work.
Thanks . Appreciate that .

That was something I was doing for something else . Just happened to be the size I needed .
The one I was making for the table ended up being short .
We used to build a lot of jigs for soffits and stuff at work . Comes pretty easy , but you're right . Sometimes just as much work in the jig .

BEAUTIFUL JOB RICH, YOUR WORKSHOP SETUP LOOKS TO BE WELL STOCKED! RAY
Thanks Ray . I'm pretty set up in there . That's key to doing any of this . Have all kinds of hardware and fasteners stocked too .
Having the dust collection all hard piped , and on a remote control switch works out fantastic .
Keeps it pretty clean in there . It's a mess right now though . Gonna be a couple days of cleaning .

Awesome shop!
In my shop in Texas, I used gates with switches, and when you opened a gate, the DC turned on.

made a poker table from one of his projects
That's nice . High degree of difficulty in that one . I remember that episode . I haven't missed many of them . Been watching on Youtube lately too .
I've done the Shaker wall clock . That's another one I want to revisit .
20210314_155856.jpg
and the Shaker wood box . Been sitting on my porch at 2 different houses for a lot of years .
20230325_105815.jpg
Gave it a tune up a couple years ago . It's out on the porch with firewood in it now .

He's a great reference source .

I've seen those . Mine are cheap plastic ones . I have the remote hanging on the wall by the table saw . Works pretty good .

Excellent work! You're where I'd like to be skill wise.
Thanks Steve . It just takes doing it , and you got that going . You're set up pretty good too .
You'll learn things as you go along too . Keep posting up your projects , I like seeing them .
Very Nice Rich!
Thanks Keith . Appreciate that bud .

Thanks . Appreciate the comment .
Very impressive!
Thanks for the comment . Got another one out of cherry just about done .
I get that wild cherry from a guy that cuts it off his property . Just a bit northwest of me in Troy .
Has some interesting grain figure in it .
