Been too hot outside to do much cooking . So I've been hanging out in the shop . This is an old Norm Abrams / New Yankee Workshop project .
I did one 30 plus years ago , and have been wanting to revisit it .
I had some hard Maple in the basement , so that's what I used .
First thing is bending the rail . I had some older sheets of underlayment that have a maple veneer on one side .
So I cut that into strips and bent that around a jig I built .
I strapped it all up dry to help start the bend .
Then glued it up and formed the rail .
Out of the jig . Came out OK ,, left side is good , right side cracked in the middle core .
Has a flat spot in it .
Just gonna roll with it . Leg blanks glued up .
Parts for the top , and the rail .
Did the math / layout for the top . That way I don't have a bunch of waste .
4 pieces in the top .
Added a hardwood strip to my circle jig and swung the top .
Size the rails ,
Cut the tapper on the legs . You have to tape the off fall back on to keep a flat
surface for ripping more than 2 sides .
Looks about right .
Back rail , and rear leg assembly .
Made a stretcher to hold the front leg , and attach the top .
All put together . Trim piece added to the bottom of the rail .
Has to have the trim or it doesn't look right .
1st coat of 3 coats of Danish oil .
Finished off with " warm satin " Top joined up pretty good .
4 sections in that .
This is the original one I did 30 years ago .
New meets old . Came out OK . Radius of the rail is off .
It works though .
Just something to look at . I already have another one in the works .
That rail being off ,,, bugs me , so I did another one .
Anyway , just something to look at .
