I'm a stickler for keeping things clean, but I got tired of taking my racks out in the yard and trying to scrub off smoke residue. I'm smarter than a smoker rack, so I fixed it.

I built a box big enough to fit all four racks in it.

I lined the box with a plastic garbage bag...

Put the racks in it...

and filled it with five gallons of hot water and about a half pint of Dawn dish soap.

I'll let it sit there all day and then hit the racks with a plastic scrub brush.

Looks like a good idea!

I usually just hit the racks with a BBQ brush right when I take the meat off & that's it for the WSM, Smoke Vault & MES.

The Lang gets steam cleaned after each use.

Yesterday I was struggling with the racks in a plastic storage container where they do not fit. Your plastic-lined box is a perfect low cost solution. Especially nice is that when they are clean I could dump the water and toss the garbage bag that served as the plastic liner if it is too grimy. Points for a great idea.

That's a great idea.

I just spray my racks with Pam before I use them and give them a quick brush down before supper.  Then they go in the dishwasher with the rest of the dishes.  They always come out shining and clean.

I tried putting my racks in the dishwasher once. Never again...

I have a sink in the garage that was designed with outdoor projects in mind and I used that to do the soaking until I got my ultrasonic cleaner six months ago. While the cleaner isn't big enough to fit the entire rack, I can do about 2/3 of it, including each end where all the metal is spot welded. Those nooks and crannies (what's the difference between a nook and a crannie?) are a PITA to get clean, so having an automated way to do it really cuts down on the work.

I've also removed the rack supports and cleaned them. They come out spotless, as I documented in this thread:

The racks in my MB 44 are 15 X 22. They ain't gonna fit in a dishwasher. That's why I built the box.
