Just wondering about the merits of using chips versus pellets. The only local source is Ace Hardware for chips. For a cello bag they run around $3.50, which fills a gallon ziplock bag. I usually go through 2/3 bag per smoke. It seems that pellets are more economical. Has anyone had experience using pellets. Pro's and Con's.
Thanks

Don't use either. Use chunks.

Unless you have a Treager or don't have room for chunks.

Use pellets, chips and chunks, just put in a pan and cover with aluminum foil. All three or any combo should work good. as far as the best, that would be the one that works the best in your particular smoker. Just cover with aluminum foil to cut off your air supply to the chips/chuncks/pellets.
Remember a controled burn, or lack of is what you want.

I have a Brinkman Porpane Smoker with double door. Should I soak the chunks and cover them with foil and poke a series of holes to allow the smoke to permeate?

In my tin can cold smoke generator I use chips and pellets. Sometimes a mix of both. I find the pellets burn more completely but we are talking about a soldering iron for the heat source.

Don't soak the chunks. Just try to keep them farther away from the heat source if you have problems with then catching fire. If that doesn't work, I suppose you could foil wrap and poke holes. But controlling their proximity to the flame is a better solution I think -- if you have the room to work with.

I use all three in my perfect flame propane for lower temp smokes i am realy liking the pellets and i also made a tin can cold smoke generater and love the pellets
