Yeah, the squid luau does look a bit disgusting, but it's VERY tasty! It's made by boiling down taro leaves (from the root that's used to make poi) until it turns into a soft mash.. similar to how you'd make spinach. Then it's cooked together with diced squid (calamari) or octopus (tako), coconut milk and onions. It's one of the most traditional of Hawaiian foods, and also found in various form on polynesian islands throughout the pacific islands.
In fact our mainland guests were reluctant to eat it because of its appearance, but after one bite they were hooked!
