Yeap. Our washing machine is on its last leg. In the market for a new top loading washer.

The wife wants simple and heavy duty washer built to last. I told her, “Thats why I married you”.
That comment didn’t go as planned.
Anyways, what brand do you guys recommend? Currently looking at Lowe’s and Home Depot.

Banjo man out.

Speed Queen is pretty much the top of the line for top load washers.

I respect the advice above .
If you have a dedicated appliance store , I suggest you go talk to them .
I just bought a range , and was at Home depot . Asked the guy a question and he wanted to jump on the internet . I told him I could do that at home .

Went to a dedicated store , and that guy knew his stuff . They match pricing too .
Guy took care of me and was actually cheaper than big box .

We went with this last year... all simple, no electronics, simple knobs . We looked at Speed Queen also, probably would have went that way except that store was 45 miles away. So went this route, this store is 15 miles away... most of our appliances have been bought through them... mainly for the service quality. If they have issues I know I can trust them to come service them. Same goes with mowers, chain saws, weed eaters and what not... buy from smaller dealers that can service them... some have gone to... if you didn't buy it from me, then not gonna work on it. Can't blame them... one or two man shops don't have the time to fix big box store junk.

Big Box stores sell what I call seconds...
Yup . It's different . I found that out when I bought a chainsaw . Took a model number I got at a dedicated outdoor tool store to Lowes , and it didn't match , but the tool number was the same .
When I asked about that the guy told me the stuff they sell is made for them .

Sorry, Finish message then post?

If you could jump back to the 80's and 90's a MayCorp (Maytag & Admiral & other brands) made a tough, reliable, simple controls, and super capacity washer.

Current house in MN came with a Frigidaire (pre Electrolux) that served us well until the transmission grenaded. Went to local Appliance store for advice. Well, they stopped selling appliances, but continue repair.
Owner gave the best advice ever for current lineup of washing machines and that is Speed Queen.
Took my wife a few rounds of laundry for the machine to teach her. She misses the extra capacity of the Admiral washer, but says the Speed Queen is better for getting clothes clean.

So a Speed Queen at a dedicated store...

Myself, I agree with the dedicated store... ie. Big Box stores sell what I call seconds... In both, quality and choice
Much of the big box name brands are cheapened down for them. A famous green & yellow lawn mower makes a POS just for the orange store

I have bought my last few at a small local appliance store as well. They know what they are talking about, always have time for questions and stand behind what they sell. They are always competitive with the big box store as much if the pricing and specials are set by the manufacturer anyway.

There are a few brands still made in the USA if you care about that. GE is one of them we bought a new set last year. Wife wanted top load smart ones but still GE. I checked prices at several places including the local appliance store all had the same model number and specs Home Depot had a good sale on them at the time so that's where they came from. Last month it was a new smart GE dishwasher same models at the same places I checked but this time Lowes was having the best sale on them. She gets notifications when they are done and can call me from work and ask me to take the clothes out of the dryer or put the clothes into the dryer cause I'm not smart enough for her to ask me to do it before she goes to work evidently :emoji_laughing: She has yet to ask me to put the dishes away after it notifies her it's done guess she's sure I'm not smart enough for that one

First off, I am shocked that you could still make your mind and hands work to post this message after telling her that. LOL

But I am with Ryan Brokenhandle Brokenhandle , we also picked up a GE after our 20 some year old other one died. The one we got has a couple more buttons to wash with , BUT it is a heavy duty and the women use it at least once a day if not more . And often blankets and comforters.

We are very happy with it , And it did not break the bank.

Another vote for Speed Queen. My cousins own an appliance dealer. Speed Queen is made in the USA and they do in house testing on their products. The only thing we’ve had go wrong is a lid switch and it was an easy fix. Also another thing she told us, use one tablespoon of dry detergent per full load. More is not always better.

that looks like the one that came in our house. I think its about 5 years old. it wasnt filling quite right at first. then I unplugged it to put up some insulation and now its great. Always baffling how unplugging and replunging fixes so much.

I miss Kenmore. I bought a set in 1995 that lasted till we moved in 2003, still going when we left them. replaced a couple $5 parts myself over the years. but bombproof!
