My friend Rick and I are going to Missouri the last week in February to hunt snow geese.

When we return home on the 28th we will have a 3 hour wait before our plane leaves Kansas City Airport.

What better time to grab some famous Kansas City BBQ.

Any suggestions as to where we should go?

Thanks,  John (BandCollector)

Kansas City is my stomping grounds and asking which place is the best is like asking a parent to choose their favorite child. But here goes.

The closest good place to eat is the Smokebox BBQ, which is about 5 miles from the airport just off of I-29. My personal preference is Oklahoma Joe's, considered by many to be the best Kansas City BBQ anywhere. It is around a half hour from the airport. Regardless of where you end up, let us know how you like it.

I have to agree with Brekar, Sooo many places, Sooo many choices. Theres just about as many BBQ joints as there are street corners.
and OK Joes is a superior place to go. Not much on ambience (it's in a gas staion) but excellent BBQ. As most every one around here smokes with oak and hickory it's more a matter of what kind of sauce you like, sweet or spicy. But you should also stop at one of the local groceries and pick up a few bottles of sauce. Most carry all the local brands. Where you huntin geese at? I'm presuming North of KC along the mighty Mo?

Smokin Guns is north of downtown and would be ~20 mins or so from the Airport depending on traffic.  If it's peak eating time, the line will be out the door at OK Joes, there are also 2 Jackstacks within 30 mins of the airport.  These would be my suggestions.  Jackstack is a bit "nicer" restaurant, Smokin Guns is in a new place and nice as well, but not as expensive as Jackstack.

Good info JDNE5B but just a heads up at smoking guns, if you like your burnt ends to be beefy carmelized tender pieces of brisket this was not the place for that when I went.  At least the one time I went they were tough and lacking flavor.  They had almost no rub or sauce on them.  Everything else was awesome I was just disappointed in the burnt ends, might have just been a bad day for burnt ends also...

I don't usually get past the pulled pork or ribs :D.. I think most of their stuff comes without sauce.

(Jackstack has amazing burnt ends)
