Afternoon all! My birthday was a couple days ago and my loving family got me some great smoking related gifts. Along with my new Maverick thermo my mom-n-law got me a amnts with 6 bage of pellets. I was reading the directions and have a question about the placement in my smoker. I have a Smoke Hallow 38" gaser with four racks inside. I normally put the meat on the top rack and a catch pan on the rack under the meat. The directions indicated not to put the amnts directly over the burner and to have ample space for airflow around tube for obvious reasons. So my question is what does directly over the burner mean? Can I put it on the third rack down and be ok or should it be off to the side or rear. The directions stated the reason is that the pellets might ignite. I guess I need to know how far away from the burner do I need to be?

Writing this post also made me think of a second question. Does it matter what location or rack the meat is on when smoking?

Thanks mike

To answer your first question - what "directly" refers to is the tube should not be close enough to the fire to cause the entire tube to ignite. It should also not be near any water pan as moisture is bad for the pellets.  The third shelf should be fine - just shield it from food drippings

The meat placement depends on the temps in your smoker. Some smokers run hotter in one area vs another and you are looking for a constant temp close to what your temp goal is
