I have the AMNPS, Is it possible to use a combination of dust and pellets for smoking? will it work? or cause too much smoke, not light properly, etc....

Thanks all for any replies!

I haven't tried it, so I can't advise although I would think it would work. If you don't get any definitive answers you should PM Todd here on SMF or leave a note on his web site or call him if you saved his card. He's the one that would know.

Why? You can use dust and pellets in your pellet smoker but the dust will burn faster if you are hot smoking. You get more smoke and flavor with pellets. I use dust for cold smoking and pellets for hot smoking. I dont see any benefit with mixing the two....

X2

But if you really want to, ask Todd.

Boykjo nailed it. Dust is the only way I can seem to get a consistent burn for a cold smoke and I need to nuke the heck out of pellets unless I am doing a hot smoke.

I thought Arizona was supposed to be the Driest State in the Union. I thought moisture was the only enemy of Pellets...JJ

But it's a dry heat!!  But that is down in PHX (up here we figure that what PHX gets for a low, that's our high)

I thought that too and found that altitude is another issue.  Flame will go out sitting on the table with about any brand of pure pellets.  The "name brand" stuff that is about 70% alder filler works a bit better. I don't like them. I have found that for real wood pellets, spread them out on a heat proof plate, nuke for about 2.5 minutes, open the door and let the steam out....repeat the process, less steam a good thing.   They are now good for a hot smoke. For a cold smoke, I then throw them in an old blender, chop them back to dust. Works for me and not too much trouble.
