Sorry! I thought I had my location there. I live in Wisconsin. I am positive its not a lighting issue. I've been over all that. Many people have been positive it was not a lighting issue, but found out it was a bit later.
What I do, is take the pellets, put them in the smoker for about an hour to dry them out as it heats up. (or the microwave) I never had to do this. I just keep my pellets in air tight plastic jugs & keep them dry.
Then I light them with a torch. I let that burn for about 2 minutes (not the 45 seconds they recommend) with the torch on them
At this point theres about an inch or more of pellets that are flamed up. I blow that out after about 15 minutes (instead of the 10 minutes) and they are all glowing/burnt, etc. (probably about 1 1/2") Here's probably the problem. Everyone I've taught how to get them lit properly has swore up & down they were lighting them fine. Many of them have recanted that statement since. I light mine deep with the Propane torch. Then I blow on it down & in toward the bottom of the unburned pellets. Then I let the flame burn awhile. When the flame goes out, I blow on it down & in until the glowing red goes deeper. Then I let it flame awhile. Then a few minutes later I do the same thing again. Then a few minutes I do the same thing again. I do this until I get about a 2" or better long, full row width glowing cherry in the bottom of the pellets. Then after about a total of 20 minutes of coming back & blowing that cherry deeper & deeper, I put it on the little bars to the left of my chip burner assembly. The only time mine ever goes out is if I use straight Cherry pellets. If you use a heat gun like is used in the video I linked in post #2 above, you can cut the time & energy down from my method. This all sounds like a PITA, but I feel it is worth it to get up to 11 hours of perfect smoke.
I put that in the mailbox and crack open the cover to draw air (which works great). I would bet many people with the Gen #1 MES using the mailbox mod could have done without it, if they would have stayed with getting it lit properly. However the mailbox does have other advantages. This said, I still prefer the advantages of not having to use a mailbox with mine.
But after that, it goes out. Same point each time. The pellets are filled up even with the top. I dont want to mound them anymore incase it jumps rows. I usually keep the top of my pellets about 1/4" from the top of the walls.
