So last week our Aldi's had corned beef flats on sale... This week they have points on sale... Since I have to go to Lowes (which I hate but HD is to far away) and Aldi's is right next door... Might as well stop in and see what they have...

Our Aldi has the points as well. Wife stopped in and got 4 of them. She had to do 2 separate buys (limit 2). I plan on doing one for St. Patty's, not sure what I'll do with the rest, but this was our first time getting anything from Aldi's. Looking forward to hearing how yours turns out.

Getting a couple more tomorrow. Flats aren't on sale here.

I'll need to go look tomorrow . I bought one flat , but wanted a point .

So my local store was fresh out of the points... Had a cooler full of flats but they were 6 something a lb... I passed... Had to go out to the grandsons house and passed by an Aldi's out there... Stopped in and they had a cooler full of the points... So I grabbed two...

I thought about getting a couple more but in past after sitting in freezer for a while did not taste that great. Thinking because the salt content.

Uncooked corned beef can be frozen for 1 to 2 months for best quality, but high salt content (roughly 827 mg–1,300 mg per 3-oz serving) accelerates flavor degradation and rancidity.

Kroger has flats and points on sale. Snagged two flats for pastrami. Probably do them in a month or so.

Stopped at local store on Wednesday and the label on the flats was $6 something, but there was sign stating the register would recalculate to around $4 and they sized around 5-6#
Also noted there is around a pound of water in the package.
I'm just not a point fan so passed on both cuts.
I have a 3-1/4# piece of tri-tip dry curing in the fridge. It will get rubbed with pickling spice tomorrow and cured another week before smoking.
I hope you got some on the Friday night feeding at the last gathering before the others got the munchies and licked the pans clean.

I've been a long time buyer of Goebbels brand. how does this compare. I'm not a fan of Aldi's but pastrami season is upon us.

I don't know. But I'll find out tomorrow. I'm going to soak for two hours to be on the safe side.

I have never seen a Cattleman's or Goebbels, Kroger only carries Kroger brand, Costco had some nice ones, I forget the brand but they were $7.95/lb (around $50 a piece) and thats just too spendy for corned beef, IMO. I mean its is highly messed with brisket. Not sure I would notice a difference if I spent 2X as much. Krogers were $3.99 for flats, $3.49 for points.

Goebbels is a good brand. I've never had to soak to reduce the salt level.

That's a good price for their brand. Too bad there isn't a Kroger up this way.

Well I bought two and we'll see thanks for the head's up. It did remind me of how much I detest Aldi's. Went to Wally world to get milk this morning and their Goebbels was $7.98

How are you boys cooking the corned beef? Per the instructions on the bag? Knowing you boys I bet ya have a few tricks…..

I use this type of corned beef to make pastrami. Here's a rather lengthy "recipe."

but briefly: soak meat for a few hours to desalinate. trim silver skin. liberally apply rub as described in link above. I do mine on a kettle. set up for around 250. put meat on side away from coals.
probe: cook to about 175. remove and tightly wrap in butcher paper. return to smoker cook to about 200-ish. Ifyou want good pastrmi: I cut thin across the grain. Set up "steamer" with dutch oven. Steam until hot and go find some rye bread.

Checking the ads this morning and Aldi has the flats on sale this week for $5.49/lb. Kroger has theirs for $3.99/lb. and the ad doesn't specify flats or points, but the picture is a flat...
