When I got married back in the 70s my brother gave me a bottle of wine with no advice or notes on the wine.  I was not a wine drinker back then and I put it up over a kitchen cabinet.  On our first anniversary we opened the wine and with cheers we tried it and both said uck this is not good.  We dumped it down the drain and recycled the bottle.   Several years later I was talking to my brother and he said do you still have the bottle of wine I gave you for your wedding and I told him we drank it on our first anniversary and it was real good…   He looked at me funny for a bit then said do you still have the bottle.  I said no we recycled it.  He looked at me again funny and after a few seconds said the empty bottle is worth around $500.00 today…  I never asked what the full bottle would be worth if I still had it.

It was a Lafite-Rothschild.  Back in the late 60s early 70s he used to buy cases of wine years before they made it and got a real good price but you have to wait to see if the wine turns out good.  This was a bottle he got from one of those cases.

I like red wine but I am not an aficionado like my brother.   I mostly drink box wine although I do like to try different wines once in awhile.

I am looking forward to this forum and to see what others are drinking.

  2. Stan, I LOVE your story!!!

I also happen to love Lafite, when able to indulge, and some of the other Premier Grand Cru Bordeaux picks too!

HOWEVER, I too do so greatly enjoy a daily "house wine," and feel it's very important for everyone to have one.

For a house wine, this means that it's affordable, it's something you love, it's findable easily so that you may go pick up some more, and it loves you! (Doesn't make you sick or give you odd reactions).

And too, if the UPS man gets stuck in your driveway, (am I the only one where that happens and I thus ply him with wine???) then you want to have "something" handy, or for any surprise guests, which you wouldn't mind opening, or that you wouldn't suddenly wish you'd saved to have with your wife, mistress, the maid, (smiles), or whomever, right?

Anyway, thank you tons for that wonderful shared sip!

These are the best splashes of wine - the authentic stories that we've all meandered through, in tandem with our copious glasses!!!

So great to read!!! Cheers and warm wishes, Leah

    Thank you Leah,

Affordable for a nightly wine is a definite for me.  When i splurge it's for a $20.00 bottle.

I never have had wine that tastes like bacon but if I could I might spend a little more.

  4. I think a lot of fans of the "crisped swine" would surely agree with you Stan! Hilarious!!! But yes, here's to affordable and findable and exceptional drinks!!! T'is great stuff! Cheers! - Leah
