My grandfather served, who very rarely talked about his military service, was in the 11th Airborne in the Pacific during WWII. Many years after his death did I learn that he was a combat medic.

Thank you veterans for what you have given us. And thank you active military personnel who protect us.

My avatar is a tribute to my dad who was a combat infantryman in the 45th Division in WWII. He fought in Italy (Anzio), France and Germany.

My son was career Air Force, now retired.

Very proud of them both. (Oh, and I did some of my own bit in the late 60's)

My maternal grandfather was a chaplain in the first world war, serving in France. I have a copy of his diary. Nothing but burials and letters home.

His son (my uncle), who is still alive, served in the second world war, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Neither of them ever talked about it.

We owe a lot to these people, whether they are family members, or not.
