IMO, and this is just MY opinion, the new "Like" system has almost completely destroyed the concept it was designed to replace--the old "Points".
It use to be an honor to receive a Point. It indicated recognition of a smoke well done, a new recipe, a new or different approach to a desired result, information that was or could be of value to the smoking community, assistance or information offered to possibly help a fellow smoker--new or long time--overcome a problem.
Getting a point meant something!!
The "Likes" have dragged that system to a new, sad low. It seems that now all that is required to receive a "Like" is a smart quip in a reply or a cute picture of a pet goldfish swimming in a bowl.
That's how far down the old system has been degraded.
Now I don't have a problem with members "Liking" this stuff but it has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with Points.
Keep the "Likes"?? Sure. After all they've worked just fine on Facebook. But this is NOT Facebook. This is SMF--a place where smokers share success , fails, ideas, tecniques, and LEARN from other smokers.
So I truly feel it's more than time to add in a new version (if that's what is required) of the old Points system and restore some relevance to giving/receiving recognition. Given the skill, knowledge and proven abilities of programmers these days that should not prove to be an insurmountable feat.
OK. That's my Sunday morning rant.
Hope everybody has a great day.

Could limit the likes to 5 or 6 a day. I used to run out of points to give out , some days.

I guess if someone takes the time to say something in your post, that is all you can hope for.

I don't see a problem either way.

No matter if you call it "Points" or "Likes" it still can be given for a Great Post, Recipe, Thread, Help, Tip, etc, etc.

Or it can still be given for something stupid.

It's not the name that matters, it's the discipline of the user.

Just my 2 Cents

Don't know what can be done about that, other than somebody explaining what the "Points/Likes" are supposed to be used for.
Kinda hard to scold someone for "Liking" something we don't think is a big deal.

If 30 people like a dog pic, You really don't expect all 30 to make a comment about it. They just like it and want you to know.
30 likes on a dog pic will not take up 2 full pages of comments in a thread. So instead of 40 peoples pet pics each getting 30 comments taking up 60 pages in a thread being scattered all over for months , The likes restrict the hundreds of comments into a condensed thread of only pics. I don't want to comment on 40 dog pics. But I want to let people know I like the pic.

Yep. That's just what I'm getting at. Likes and points are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT things and there needs to be some kind of separation.
Maybe Jeff TulsaJeff TulsaJeff can do something about this.

I get what you're saying . That's why I posted . I don't let that bug me ,, but completely understand if it bugs you , and agree with the point you make . No pun intended .

Both work for me. Both are a Pat on the Back without further commentary. True, most may be more used to hitting the Like button from using Fb and give more freely, but that does not necessarily mean they take it more lightly than giving Points. When I joined, over 6 years ago, the use of Points had been suspended for among other reasons like arguments and accusations of favoritism, members were taking them too seriously and to mean more than, " I like your post. "...JJ
