Got hooked on making these after one eyed jack one eyed jack posted one he made in another thread . I had been looking to try one , but just had a mental block on where to start . After seeing his , a light bulb went off . I think I've done 8 or nine since .
This is the first one I did . More of a scoop .

The second one , I roughed out a handle , them just grabbed a couple pieces
from the scrap box and glued them on .

I really don't know where I'm heading with this one .
I just start shaping until I call it done .

These actually work good for scooping dry goods out of the container .
I leave the inside rough on these . I like the aged looked .

So I figured I need to do a regular spoon . So while the finish was drying on one , I cut the blank for the next one .
I also made a template for a small and large profile .

One thing I was doing " wrong " was shaping the outside first .
Makes it hard to hold when shaping the bowl .

So it starts all over . Hacking out the inside .

Alot of gouging and sanding . I use a dremel tool just a little .
Most of it is hand work .
So a few more in I started using the drill press to speed things up .
Also shaped the inside first . Makes it easier to clamp .

Goes a lot faster this way . Shape the outside last .

Anyway , I ended up with 2 sets of cherry and one out of walnut ,
and the 2 scoops .
None are the same , none are perfect . I like the " flaws " myself .

The large walnut spoon gave me a fit , but turned into my favorite .

one eyed jack one eyed jack Thanks for the inspiration bud .
I really enjoy these .

Those look good. I know you need to finish with linseed oil or something food safe. Do you need to worry about what type of glue you use?

I should have addressed that . I would only use the scoops for dry goods . The first one actually holds a 1/4 cup . The second scoop I never checked .
The regular spoons are all one piece .

Those are very Cool, Rich!!
My favorite are the Cherry, and the Multi-Species you have there.
We have a couple store bought in our drawer, but they're really only good for stirring---Too shallow to use as a spoon. Yours can actually be used as spoons.
Those Forstner bits do a good job of "Hogging Out".
Like.

They look awesome Rich! You are definitely talented! I'd still be scratching my head at the mental block part!

Looks great Rich! They are getting better each time and looking more organic or natural I guess would say. I made a few pipes and guitar parts and it's insane how much you learn each time. It took time to learn how to sharpen but LOVE using hand tools. Sometimes I'd just clamp a board to make curlies. I'd be trying a spokeshave on those spoons. If you want another idea, check out mash paddles for brewers. Bread board meets spoon. I think one would look great under that neon sign.

Thanks Al .

Those are a work of art, I wish I had your talent!

They look awesome Rich!
Thanks guys . Some of the cuts from the profiles make me think " cast iron scraper " So I'm thinking something with a longer handle than the plastic ones you buy . Stay tuned .

I went and looked . Yup . I like those .
Wooden spoons are my go-to for mixing batters
I bet they work good for that .
So nice.
I used to dabble in wood, but don't have a dedicated shop these days.
I'd have to have a shop of some sort . I spend a lot of time in there .
Thanks for looking
