It depends on which Generation MES you have.

The AMNPS was actually designed to just barely fit on the support bars to the left of the Chip burner assembly of the Gen #1 MES 30.

In the Gen #2, the best place seems to be over the hole left by removing the little water pan hanging from the slanted drip plate.

In the Gen #2.5, so far I prefer to put the bottom rack in and set my AMNPS on the far left of that rack, away from the heating element.

Thanks, I put it to the left of the element. the only problems i had were it went out a couple times, and my pork shoulder dripped on the end row of pellets.  The shoulder is now in the thermos getting happy.  Thanks Bearcarver !

Below is how I place it in my Gen #1 MES 40. It's bigger than the MES 30, but the AMNPS fits in the same place in the MES 30 Gen #1.

Notice the Half of a foil pan upside down above it to keep drips off.

I started a thread a few days ago where I posted my solution to getting a little more air to the AMNPS when it is placed on the rails to the left of the chip loader in my MES 30. I simply replaced the chip loader with a piece of duct work with a tin can attached into which I drilled several holes that are considerable larger than the three small holes in that loader.

The other thing I do, which I learned from reading posts in this forum, is to pull out the chip tray about an inch in order to let more air get from the chip loader holes down to where the AMNPS is placed.

Here's the picture of my tin can mod. The crinkled end gets stuffed into the 3" chip loader hole.

Thanks for the help guys. John, I Like the idea for the air intake.  What a great site!

I have The 5 x 8 AMNPS and a Masterbuilt 30 inch electric smoker.  I place the tray on the bars to the left of the smoke box, at the bottom of the smoker.  I make sure a good inch of the material in the AMNPS is glowing red before placing it on the bars.  I also open my chip tray loader open an inch or so for some airflow. . I also place a piece of aluminum foil over the AMNPS to stop drips from above effecting it

And I have never had a problem with it going out on it's own.

Thanks Bear.  My Gen #1 30" broke after about 5 cooks and MB would only replace with a Gen #2.  Regarding your Gen 2 solution, since the hole where the water pan hangs is smaller than the AMNPS, does the AMNPS have problems continuing to smoke in areas where it is over the plate/water pan holder  (less air underneath) versus over the hole (more air)?  Also, since the water pan catches the fat from a smoke, would you recommend putting a tin foil "basket" over the plate to catch the drippings or something else?  The way I have the AMNPS is on the first rack, which I do not like as it takes up cooking space and in the 30" that can be limited.  As you can probably tell, I am new at this and appreciate everyone's feedback.    Thanks,  greg

I would put a throw-away foil pan on the floor, below the water pan hole to catch any drips. Then change it when it gets too ugly to look at (depends on what you're smoking how long that is).

Once you get the AMNPS going good, the little parts of the perimeter being over the edges of the hole shouldn't matter.

I never use the bottom rack in my MES----I find it's a bit too close to the heating element.

It's a shame they didn't replace your Gen #1 with another Gen #1.

Perfect Bear.  Just what I needed to hear.

I did the research and originally bought the Gen 1 on purpose. Yeah, wasn't too happy with the Gen 2 replacement, though at least the vent is on top.  Maybe MB has a large inventory of Gen 2s they can't sell as they are selling more of the Gen 1s?
