Good Grief , I woke up Wednesday morning with an acute case of gout. For those who don't know about gout and how painful it can be let me say this. You know how much it hurts when you stubb your toe hard on a solid object? Well gout is like that but Keep kicking!!! I took my emergency pills and drank lots of water, I was unable to get out of bed for the first hour or so. Finally it began to lessen to the point where I can now walk but not far. So for the next few days I will be in a wheelchair again. It is subsiding so I will be ok in a couple of days.

Now for the really tough part...... If you have gout three of the worse things you can eat are...... are you ready for this? 1. PORK including BACON! 2. Turkey ....yep its not good for everyone like we thought. and finally and I could care less about this one 3. Cauliflower.

Are ya with me so far. Now comes the hard part , I am a Canadian and our Thanksgiving is on Monday. So no Turkey, no Pulled Pork or Juicy ribs, My wife is going to make me a big ole Thanksgiving Salad. Does that suck or what??

I lay in bed feeling sorry for myself and finally I got a rush of blood to my head and I called up a nutritionist in the health ministry and was told that neither Chicken nor duck contains the purinols that adversly affect gout. Yahoo!!

I am going to smoke a Whole chicken for myself.

.Enjoy your bird monday!

Hey Gnu. sorry to hear about your gout. What a bad time for it to hit! Well, you have the right idea....smoke the heck out of some chickens and enjoy!

Sorry to hear Gnu, sounds like you've got the right attitude about it. Hope you get over this round of it soon.

Geeze guys did ya have to tell me about no Beer or Gravy and then remind me about shingles....I had it about 20 years ago, I was not fond of it either. Gout will eat shingles and spit it out laughing. Gout wins by a landslide.

Trav much as I'd like to, kicking anything right now is not on my to do list.

jlmacc; for pete's sake take your alopurinol every day, its a pretty cheap prescription and it works for the most part. The alternative is not pleasant.

Doc said I can have Dino ribs in moderation. No booze though.

Those who know me know that moderation is not my strong suit.

Sorry to hear about your gout. I to have suffered with it at times, luckily mine isn't as bad as what you are enduring. I was told cherry juice was good for flushing out the gout. Seemed to work in my case.

Hope ya get to feeling better soon.

Hey GnuBee, I didn't see you mention not being able to eat Brisket, Cook yourself a WHOLE PACKER...

Sorry to hear about the gout... I would have a hard time deciding which was more painful, Gout or No BBQ...

300 is the magic number for me!!!!!

I take 1 300 mg tablet of Allopurinol a day (I do take it everyday) and eat/drink whatever I want and haven't had any back talk from the gout monster in over a year.
I had it so bad once I couldn't walk for a week and a half, and then it was still painful for at least another week. You won't catch me missing my pill once a day!!!!!!!
Gout even surpasses the pain of giving birth, so my Dr. has told me....LOL

Gnubee, get the pill and live happily ever after!!!!

Better to be safe then sorry. Miss a pill Gnu and 9 months later you will regret it. lol

Here's another vote for gout SUCKS!
I got it in February, and struggled with it until April. Mine started in the joints between the foot and toes and then moved to my ankle. I had it in both feet (luckily not at the same time). I did have it in my big toe at one point. My first doctor gave me the Alopurinol, but too low of a dose. I kept getting flare ups, but he wouldn't change anything. Got a new doctor and he upped the dose to 300 mgs, had 1 flare up in about 3 months. I can eat and drink almost what I please now. I try to drink lots of water. My doctor told me that the beer was a bigger deal than the food.

Anyway, hope you get rid of the pain soon!

Never had gout, thank God, but my brother & dad had it. The Doc told them to start eating bananas like freakin' apes. It helped.

I have recently had a couple of bouts with kidney stones. Trust me, you DON'T want to go through it. The Doc gave me percocet for the pain. That stuff knocks me out but it works.

Hope you get to feeling better GB.

My friend - I am so sorry to hear about your temporary set back. There are lots of us here to support you in many ways. Most of the folks who have known you longer may be more personal but the rest of us can certainly provide you with moral support and friendship and that is all I have to offer you but I hope I can help

Roger sorry to hear this news hope it eases up soon and that you can get it straightened out to where you can eat and drink things in moderation. Yea I know thats a dirty word but one we seem to become better acquainted with as we get older

Take "the pill" (allopurinol) regularly.

I am guessing you don't realize that even though you have not had the pleasure of the uric acid crystals falling out and starting another gouty arthritis attack, they are still silently ending up in your kidneys. This eventually will cause damage and then failure.

Sorry to hear about your setback. Enjoy your chicken and Happy Thanksgiving!
