733 days until my next retirement.  Thats IF I find all the goodies I need to finish my smoke house...lolol

I love corn starch as well. Here in the south they like to use flour in their gravies. My self, whose mom was Italian and German always used corn starch. So do I.

Well the food grade starch I make goes to General Mills mostly. The place that makes Mc Donalds apple pies uses our starch in their pies.  But there is a company under the same ownership as the one I work for that makes Argo.  So I guess maybe I should have said we make industrial non food and industrial food grade

But I'm glad you like cornstarch...buy lots of it LOL

Dam don't know how I missed this wayyyyy back. I'm an Electrician by trade, how ever I'm a jack of all trades, almost master of 1. I currently  have a Journeyman's license. I am working on taking the Master's test, but that's no cake walk 1 in 4 pass. I worked the maintenance end of it for over 10 years till I got the royal shaft with a new super in 2010. I now work PT for a very small shop when they need the help, as well as maintenance for a couple places on an needed basses. Seams I'm not working more then I am.  Looking for FT work but jobs are scarce, and seams like I keep getting beat out by the pups. I do lots of work for friends and family to make ends meet, as we all know unemployment don't pay the best.

Sorry to hear of your situation.  The electrical situation up here in the Pacific NorthWest is just about as dismal.  Seems to run in cycles of 4-5 years of good work, 2-3 years of next to nothing.  If you're a shoppie, you still have to be careful with all the cutbacks.

Good luck on your Master's test.  It usually takes3 or 4 attempts to pass all the parts of Washington's equivalent to the Master's test.

The best thing I have going for me is I retired from the Electrical trade, FINALLY.  I'm so retired, I even let my ticket lapse, deliberately.  Most of my time was spent in New Heavy Electrical Construction in the local Refineries and to be quite truthful, I'm sick and tired of climbing the towers.  4" rigid didn't help either.  Being 67 really doesn't help.

Good Luck on getting back into the labor force.  What states does Kansas reciprocate with?  Have you thought of traveling to get you through this drought of work?  Nobody likes to, but we've all had to do it just to keep food on the table.

I guess since it has been over 30 days and they have not sucked me back into the workforce for the 4th time I can finally say I am retired. I spent 17 years designing electronic security for military reservations and DOD facilities. We did everything from alarming rooms to access control with biometrics to facial recogniton CCTV systems. 

For the last year (sucked back into the workforce) I helped one of the largest restaurant chains solve a $100,000.00 false alarm fine issue for over 400 restaurants in the US. 

My wife and I ran a small catering business (as second job) for about 5 years to put some kids thru school. 

Now I am going to volunteer to assist a chef in a Farm to Table program to benefit the less fortunate. Excited to get to do something I love.

I own a carpet cleaning company. I am an owner operator meaning you get the owner on every job. Plans are in place to get me off the truck this spring. I got out of EMS, still have a valid EMT card,  but I'm working as a security guard now. I enjoy it, less stress/responsibility and almost $5/hr more!!!! I hope to never go back to patient care again, if I never see another hospital ( impossible I know) or have to deal with someone else's health (kinda rude I know) then I'll be a happy man!

I miss the fun parts of the job but my last year on the rig just blew donkey nuts and I just became burnt and bitter.

I am a Biomedical Engineer and I work in Research and Development for a small cancer device company in Atlanta. It is very interesting and provides numerous challenges on a daily basis. I just bought my first smoker 3 days ago and I am excited to begin producing some awesome BBQ. I am glad I found an active community of nice and like minded people to help me on my quest.

I own and run a product design firm, www.compassdesign.com, that develops products for a variety of clients.  Our focus is in medical devices though as a consulting office we've also designed office products, sporting goods, toys, telephone systems, defense products and consumer electronics.  We get a chance to work with some of the brightest and most creative people around which means I'm usually pedaling as fast as I can to keep up!  It's NEVER dull.  

I also really enjoy cooking and this whole smoking thing is a new adventure for me.

I schlep mail part time now, prior to this I was a sailor in the Coast Guard - retired Chief.  Yes I said sailor cause those guys you watch in the movies and on TV flying the HELO's are not sailors, they are over glorified pilots that do a 9-5 type of job and get most of the recognition that 99.9% of the rest of the service will never see.  While we stood 4-8 watches for years on end, Christmas duty, underway missing the births of our children or birthdays etc.. And I hear some pretentious Officer on the weather channel show talking about how he's going to be late for his anniversary dinner with his wife makes me want to puke more than any 26 foot wave ever did.

Ok I didn't mean for this to be a rant, proud sailor, and am enjoying the no stress life of mail delivery.
