I am currently disabled, have been for almost 20 years, it is what happens when you have a failed jump on a dirtbike and fly about 30 Ft thru the air and your head and collar bone stop you only after many many fractures and a TBI................................
I spent almost 30 years in the Mechanical Trade, before that I turned wrenches, I have worked on small engines, boat motors (inboard and outboard) motorcycles, cars, tractors, anything with a electric or combustion motor, I started about 10 years old on small engines and associated simple stuff, I turned wrenches for Chevrolet and Ford here in Va, after I found I would not be using my hands after 50 years old from the damage I moved to the Mechanical field more or less focused on the Refrigeration end, worked all phases from industrial (Dupont), Commercial and Residential, when working on cars I was already in refrigeration regarding Automotive and Recreational use (boats, campers, tractors etc), some of the companies I worked for also did many other aspects, like maintenance so to speak, I worked for Restaurant Equipment Contractors which meant we did it all, it was relatively easy for me with a strong background in electronics and radio communications as well, I was very good with anything in reality seeing I had a very good background in many areas, I am well versed in propane and natural gas equipment regarding HVAC and Appliances, electrical work is second nature to me, I would always check codes for particulars in different counties if it was a new install, if it was a building/business like a deli, restaurant or buffet we were doing from the ground up then it was all in the plans and did not have to worry myself with it, so in regards to the Restaurant Equipment position, I was not in sales unless I would recommend a product or equipment based on its serviceability or reliability that I had years of experience with, I was a Mechanic, we would be called to a restaurant to work the better part of a day or days on anything from heating tables, display coolers, fridges, freezers (wall, box, over/under cabinet or table tops, walkins, ice makes, slicers, gas/electric ranges, fryers, dryers, coolers, etc etc, that job was by far the best one I had ever had because of the various pieces I got to work on, it was something different all the time, and I became kinda renown because of my knowledge on the so many different models and manufacturers, it is pretty cool when you get a call from a retailer or a business owner asking for you to help someone there with fixing a issue that no one can seem to solve or may want your recommendation for a manufacturer or type of equipment that they want to place in one of their businesses, not to mention when you do the best of qaulity work and really care, the owners would always make sure you got fed while you were there, all the food and or drinks you wanted :)
And most which I did not use, if I were to take my family there or go there with friends would pick up the entire tab and make me get everything I could possibly want for the evening on their dime :), it did happen a few times but that is only because they would not let me pay.............................., can't call the police to make someone take your money LOL.
So for me, the career has been a really interesting part of my life, it has put me in really unique places all over Va and brought me to meet a wealth of tremendous people that most are still trying to get me back in the business but I cannot do it anymore as a result fo the disability issues, I would surely love to but for reasons too many to list here, I can not, and it breaks my heart still, because I love working and love helping people, my parents fault :)
Just like this venture here, I am going to make some Jerky first and then expand, but what a great bunch of folks here, very nice, very helpful and understanding, and this gives me something to do and share and perfect over the years that is actually productive and 9in the end I am looking forward to helping those I can once I learn more about the brining and curing as well as techniques regarding the smoking/drying of meats and veggies.
