He Ya'll
what good is life without pointing out your own stupidity. I have a two grate system on my Kamado where i typically smoke on the top grate.. I've always liked having a "drip/moisture" pan whether in my Kamado or offset between the stone and upper grate., both for humidity and flavor. I had never given any thought to the rigidity of the pan through the process of high heat and many cooks. Typically not a big deal if you pull the meat and clean after cooking. On Saturday while reverse searing a Picanha my fire/temp got a little out of control. to this day I don't know why I thought pulling the drip pan at that time was necessary. Long story short, as the pan got off the grate the entire bottom of the aluminum pan ceased to exist, depositing the entire contents down on my left foot. So aluminum disintegrates with multiple applications of heat. Time to look for a new pan that will fit between grates that's only 8"" wide.
I should be able to wear shoes by this weekend.
Gonna buy my missus a "I'm with stupid" shirt to wear when we go out.
carry on

Ouch!!
Reminds me of the ONE and ONLY time I dumped a chimney of hot coals in the firebox while barefoot....
I use those pans under a cook but only once or twice. No water involved.
When you can walk again shop around for a steel baking pan.

I did the same thing . Like you said once .
I've been using the broiler pan from my oven in the pellet grill . Does double duty if you use the slotted top . Heck I never use it in the house . Works good . I just line it with wide heavy duty foil .

Warning taken, not stupid we've all done it. Fxsales1959, hope your foot heals quickly and glad you're OK. That's a pretty dangerous proposition to burn your dogs because your aluminum pan caved in! I like your suggestion Chopsaw, using the sturdy broiler pan that we never ever use and it's shallow enough to fit under the grate.

Heck of an idea! We haven't used that broiler pan in years. It just sits in the drawer at the bottom.
Enameled and probably easier to clean :emoji_laughing:

I have two Big Green Eggs, and I use an aluminum deep dish pizza pan for my drip pan, although I rarely add liquid, I just use it to catch drippings or any spray I might add to the meat. I use a butter/broth bath for chicken, so the pizza pan can double for that too.

Ouch! That is a bummer. Glad you kept your sense of humor through it! I’ve never heard of that happening, it’s a good lesson for me. Thank you for sharing, hope you heal soon!

Sorry to hear you got burned. Too many of us lose track that those pans are called Disposable so we use them once or twice and toss them...JJ

Thanks for sharing, might help some others to keep from having the same thing happen! Hope you heal quickly!
Garage sales or auctions are good places to find cheap deals on cook ware that you can use in the smoker. In my case I use some in smoker and others in shop... catching oil drips from farm equipment.
In the case of " I'm with stupid t shirt" , get two, I can use one also. I recently figured out I can't fly, and I don't bounce well anymore either!

Also if you're worried about keeping the outside of pans clean from smoke build up, wipe the outside with thin film of dawn dishwashing soap... it will clean up very easily! We often do this with our coffee pots we use on the fire while camping.
