Chicken on sale and vortex was handy. Perfect match. Light a chimney of coal and once fully lit placed in the vortex. The chicken was placed as shown. Placed a chunk of hickory over the vortex for smoke. Rotated the lid ever 15 min. Checked temp at 1hr mark got readings of 175-185. Weighed a couple quarters before applying rub and 1 pound 2 ounce to 15 ounce was what I got. Rub was Oakridge Secret Weapon. Nothing fancy but taste was good and the meat juicy. Thanks for looking.

Looks good! I've been doing legs with the vortex instead of wings and even if wing prices go down I may stick with legs LOL!
Did you turn them at all?
No, I left them in place start to finish. We like wings too, but leg quarters are my wife's fav. That package of chicken was under $6.10 really hard to pass up.

What are your thoughts on a smaller vortex? I got the cheapo 10" but have not used it yet. I could not find a smaller one

i think we might have the same one clifish .

i haven't used it yet but the metal seems thick enough and it has some weight for it's size , it also has 5 spot welds . BTW ..... lutani sent me a e-mail asking if i received their product in good condition .... that's a first for me . it's encouraging to see them follow up like that ;)

honestly i got the small one because of malcom and it's less than half the price of a medium .
the real vortex looks to have larger weld spots with more overlap which in my mind suggest a more durable design . but $10 gives me the chance to try one . if i like it and if fails i'll get the real deal to replace it .

take care , jeff
