I've had my MES40 1 year now and even got the A-MAZE-N tray and tried different types of wood pellets in it. For some reason I can not keep the amazen tray to stay burning. I light it with a gas torch and let it burn for several minutes. get plenty of hot little coals going, fire burns to a smolder and it smolders for about 5 to 10 minutes and goes out. I have tried all of your guys suggestions. make sure the wood pellets are totally dry. tried different types and brands of wood pellets. pull the side dumper out halfway for airflow to all the way out and no difference. To keep smoke going I keep having to feed the original wood chip tray with pellets every 20 to 30 minutes. that gets old during a 12 hour smoke with a large pork butt roast or turkey. I'm tired of baby sitting it just like my old Brinkmann horizontal charcoal wood smoker. Dont get me wrong the MES40 does an amazing job smoking the meats. They came out way more tender and juicier then my old Brinkmann charcoal wood smoker could ever do. I smoked my best pork roasts, pulled pork and beef briskets i've ever done in the MES40 but had to baby sit it constantly with feeding it wood pellets or re-lighting the amazen smoking tray only to have it go out 10 minutes later.
SO, I pulled the trigger on a Traeger Pro 34 today. should be delivered next week. Wont be here in time to smoke the Thanksgiving turkey but the MES40 will have to do and i'll have to feed the side dumper every 30 minutes 1 more smoking. It will still taste amazing, i'm just not one that likes to go out every 20-30 minutes to add more pellets or wood. some of the smokings I do are over night or started wee hours of the morning and I crawl back into bed for another 4 hours. be kinda nice to crawl back into bed knowing it'll keep smoking for hours afterwards. Now i need to read up on all the tips and tricks of smoking with a Traeger. Already have a Bluetooth dual meat thermometer. what else?

Did the tray keep burning when/if you left the door open on the MES?

Were the pellets flush with top of maze row or over the top?

3-4 minutes in the microwave makes the pellets keep burning for me, watch closely as I have to stay under 2 minutes at a time to keep pellets from lighting lol. I use a tube and that's the only way that I can reliably get them to stay lit. enjoy the new smoker when it gets home

It goes out on the bottom rack right side above the chip burner with the loader pulled out an inch or two?

I did the microwave thing and even put a bunch of pellets on a cookie sheet in the oven for a bit to make sure they were dried out as much as possible.

Tray burned just fine outside on my patio for hours. soon as I put it in the MES on the bottom or 1 rack up it would smoke for 5-10 minutes and go out. Side dumper halfway out and even all the way out. it still went out. its like its not getting enough oxygen/air flow inside to keep it smoldering on its own. I live in Denver and dont know if the altitude has anything to do with it but i've done everything to keep it going and just keeps going out shortly after I close the smoker door.
I've had the tray flush to the top. half way up over flowing, packed in there. loosely in there. I clean the tray out each time so all the perforated holes are not blocking air flow.

Is the vent open on top of the smoker?
Try it without the feed tube in at all.

You probably need the tube for high elevations which is one reason he has them. If you contact Todd I believe he'll swap out your tray for a tube.

Maybe try an exhaust stack. The extra draw seems to help mine burn much nicer. Mailbox mod is an easy cheap option also. Don't give up on it. Can still be used for many things, but enjoy your new outfit.

Right there is your problem. You're probably at about 6,000 or 8,000 feet elevation.
The AMNPS Tray doesn't work at that altitude.

That altitude forced Todd to invent the AMNTS Tube Smoker for High Altitudes & larger Smokers. You'll have great success with the Tube Smoker.
