The wife says I have enough smokers and cookers. Some here have said their is never enough and I agree. With that said it is true I am doing pretty good in this dept but I can't resist the tinkering bug. I am going to build a UDS this summer and starting my design plans. When I built my bib baby double I insisted that the barrels only contain something like food products or the like. It took some effort to find. I am wondering how important that is now. Even on this forum I have seen it stated that burning out the drum will clean out most anything. So I thought I would ask that question here of you guys.

Can a 55 gallon drum that contained something harmful or make the food taste bad be made safe/usable by burning it out?

Pete

I don't know the answer to your question , But why would you risk Makeing yourself and your family sick?
Food grade drums are hard to find but You know that they are safe.

Maybe is the safer answer. I'd find somethin water based at least. I get mine from the local newspaper, contained water based ink. Easy ta wash out an a good burn an there good ta go. Just my two coppers worth.

I am gearing up myself to do a build this summer and i often ask the same question. the answer that awlays come back to my mind is non-toxic. Thank for starting this thread looking forward to what other think

Good Luck

this has been covered so many times-non toxic. if u don't know don't use it-food grade drums here run $60-I gonna make 1 too

It may not be popular on the forum, but southern pig cookers have been made out of old oil barrels for years and years now.

Which means, it has no acute affects, but could explain some of the affectations of us North Carolinians....

Honestly, I'd say it depends on what and how toxic the contents were. Pesticides...No way no how. Other chemicals would be a judgment call you have to make. Look for a pickle company or bottling company for food products.

I built my UDSs out of new drums... About the only way that I would do it, but there have been many done differently.

look for animal feed manufacturers, they get molassis in drums all the time, My buddies came from a bird food company that orinially had peanut oil in it.
