I'm new to the forums, as a member, but have been reading and researching here for months. I have always enjoyed grilling, but have never really been good at it. Nothing was ever consistent, my temps were always all over the place and, truly, I just don't know what I'm doing. Well, I think my grilling life just got better. After months of research, I broke down and bought a Rec Tec Pellet Grill (RT680).
The grill came in on Thursday and by supper time I had some simple, but great, burgers on the platter. No burnt meat, no raw meat and no fuss. Tonight, without a doubt, I grilled my best steak ever on the new Rec Tec. Being worried about screwing up an expensive cut of meat, I had my wife pick up some NY Strips from Sam's Club. Being a fan of smoked Rib-eyes from a local restaurant, I thought I would give smoking them a shot. With the Rec Tec heated up to 210, I put the steaks on (plain) and hit the extreme smoke button. Smoke generation was pretty good. After an hour and 10 minutes, I pulled the steaks (internal was at about 110), cranked the grill to 500, added garlic, lemon pepper and blackening seasoning. Once at temp (which took about 10 minutes) I placed them on the searing grates for about 5 minutes on each side, hitting an internal of 137.
The strips came off perfectly cooked throughout, juicy, tender, with good sear marks and a great taste of hickory!!! My wife says they rival the hickory smoked Rib-eyes at the restaurant but, although they were amazing, I'm not completely sure of that. I would have liked a little more smoke and will probably throw the AMNPTS in with them next time and hope I don't over smoke them.
All-in-all, I'm extremely satisfied with the Rec Tec so far. I would do these same steaks every night without a complaint, but I'm really looking forward to trying out everything else that I have been reluctant to attempt!!
