My step father did amazing things on a lathe. Always thought about getting into that.I've always enjoyed working with wood--high school lathe turning was a fav.
IF I had a table saw and a good planer.....and the room.......![]()
Morning folks!
A few months ago I decided to see if I could start a little side venture making cutting boards and cook top covers. I've sold 6 boards so far. I think I found a good price point for one that is 1 1/4x12x16 for 60.00.

And I enjoy making them! I'm saving the profits for my next smoking venture....
Thanks! I'd be very happy to sell you one! I have a couple glued up. I'll send you a PM with pics when they are ready.Nice work Steve!
I am willing to buy one from you!
Thank you! I'm going to start doing the juice grooves soon. I'm making a jig for it.Very nice work. Wish I had time to do more work in my shop. I have been on the hunt for a nice used planer. I found one but hesitated and it got sold. Are you able to router in a drip channel? That would bring it to the next level. I have several projects on my list, work bench, double barn doors for bedroom, and two mantles. I have some 8” x 18” x 8’ walnut drying for the mantles in my garage right now.
Thanks Red!Beautiful work Steve! A large and well crafted cutting board is a fine thing...and a nice tool to have in any pitmaster/chef's arsenal! And it's one of those essential kitchen items that you can just about name your price for a quality board. The really good ones ain't cheap!
One of my sons and his wife bought me an really nice large cutting board last year for Father's Day...one of my prize possessions! I never had a Nice board before - and never had one that was big enough to slice large briskets or whole racks of spares. I love that thing and use it all the time!

I made that after I was gifted those knives from Jeff.Looking back on your first pic I see something I will be making as soon as it cools down about 20 degrees. A magnetic knife holder. I have a nice pair of live edge cedar boards and the magnets. The back side is real rough so I will have to run it thru the planer a bunch of times to get a nice flat surface to work with.

Thanks! Once I found a lumber source that sells rough sawn lumber. I could keep the price down.LOVE IT!!
I toyed with the idea of making one, but sourcing hardwoods around here is next to impossible and some of them are SO expensive when ordering online (and don't even get me started on the big box stores!).
Thank you! Now that we're empty nesters. I have time to dabble in this and camping. I've always enjoyed woodworking. I hope I don't tire of it!Really cool and it looks like you really do nice work. I have tried to figure out various side hustles in the past but normally come back to different problems. Biggest is lack of free time these days, I am trying to spend more family time than I used to and at what point does an enjoyable hobby turn into work and loose it's luster. Still hoping someday I will trip into something
What kind of router do you have?Thank you! I'm going to start doing the juice grooves soon. I'm making a jig for it.
Skil 2.5 HP with plunge and fixed base. Now that you mention it. It does have a edge guide. Forgot about that. What kind of router do you have?
My Delta had an edge guide, and I just went around the edge with it to make the groove.

Thanks! Depends on what you mean by customizing. I don't have an engraver.Nice work Steve… very nice bud. We love cooking at home… prep and all.
I’d support your side gig!
Can you customize or engrave by chance?
Oh, and I'm looking at the palm routers too. I like the idea of them being more compact. Can you get me the model number of yours?I like using a jig to cut the groove . Sets the stopping point for the corner and gives me better control . I have a 1 1/4 HP Bosch palm router ( love that thing ) for doing edges and the groove on Carving boards .
I set it up to work with that router , but you can buy adjustable ones . I just screw it to the bench .

Helps to keep the corners from burning .

I have another one that centers the finger grab and locates the feet equally .

That cheese board came out nice . Got to watch that edge grain on maple . Runs different directions right in the middle of the board .
