Hi All Tried the snake method for 1st for an over night cook. Small 3 lb flat was done at 5:30 this morning. Shut all the vents down, it is now 8:30 and the WSM is still reading 207. What gives, I believe I closed all the leaks.

The hickory didn't  burn all the way?

The snake held temps pretty good around 240 most of the time, this morning temps they up too were 280s.

Thanks Dan

This is how I started at 10;30 last nite..Had to add coals at the beginning to get the temps up.

At 8:30 this morning temp still  in the 200's?

I have recently replaced my lid therm with a River Country therm.  Very accurate.  Although I don't use the snake method in my WSM, I noticed it takes the smoker about 4-5 hours to get down to ambient, outside temp.  The barrel and bowl are usually just warm to the touch at 3 hours, but it obviously takes longer for the coals to go cold.

Hi Temps were taken with my Maverick 732..So then  3 hrs is about right? Some people say after 1 hr it is cool to touch?

So Far every time I used my WSM 22 it took awhile to get cool to the touch.

This was more of an experiment to see how to extend the cooking hrs on the 22..Last few times with a full ring KKB I was only getting  about 5-6 hrs.

Thanks Dan

3 hrs+ is right.

Over this past winter and spring I had to be very aware of the internal temp after smoking. We got ALOT of rain.
The WSM is a bit of a rain collector and I was getting tired of throwing away good used charcoal due to water accumulation in the bowl when it rained. After smoking I had to wait 4-5 hours before I could put a vinyl cover on the WSM.

5-6 hours on a full load? Wow. Even with the current KBB formula I could get 12-14 hours out of a full load.

Hi 5-6 hrs on full load doesn't seem right. But last nite with the snake I could have gotten another afew hrs.
