Being new to smoking and having a brand new char griller I have a question. As most of you know, my grill has a thermometer in the lid. I understand that you cannot go by the temp this gauge displays. I want to place my temp gauge where it will do the most good. I would welcome any advise. Thanks.

The temperature at the meat/grate level is what's important...In an unmodified Char Griller I would suggest moving the meat as far away from the SFB as possible and rotate it periodically for even cooking...JJ

Your best bet is to get a digital therm with a wired probe. Then you can put the probe thru a block of wood with a couple of inches of the end sticking out & put it right next to the meat.

I would leave the thermo meter where it is and then run a new wire thou a piece of wood or something hard and lay it on the shelf that the meat rest on. I do it and that way you will get a correct reading right where the meat is.

Here is a gadget I rigged up.  Two pieces of 1 X 2 joined with a screw so the top can swivel. Three holes at varying heights for the therm probe to go through.  I put one on each side until that point in the smoke where I might need one to probe meat.

The lid therm on my CGSP reads about 75 degrees low at normal smoking temps.
