temp probe

how far do you stick in the probe lets sai in a pork butt roast w/o bone.i used the temp prob for turkey and it gave me a false reading. it said my turkey was done in two hours i didnt belive it so i checked with my other one and it was only at 140. i checked bothe old and new in boiling water and they were within 2 degrees of each other. it is a z7 with two probes and it is wireless. i was looking at pic on here and it looks like you all put just the tips of the probes in. thanks

GS, you may have penetrated into a cavity with the turkey which gave you the false reading. The sensors are in the point of the thermometer probe. Be careful not to get too close to a bone or into a cavity.

As for a boneless roast, insert the probe to the center of the meat and you should be fine.

Well... here's the rub as far as I can tell: The temp sensor is actually in the tip. HOWEVER- the metal "holder" <Spike body> will conduct a certain amount of heat down it's length. If you can, bury the sucker at least half way. Barring that, I suppose the ole potato chunk trick would help. Send it thru the spud and into the object to be measured to the appropriate depth, with the edge of the spud touching the meat.

Anyone else got ny ideas?

Nope, won't work!
You may have had the probe tip in a fat pocket instead of meat. That will change things. You can generally tell by feel when inserting the probe. Make sure it is not touching bone and as close to the center of the piece as possible.
Remember, the tip is where the probe reads temperature.
