"Taylor" Pork Roll (Sammies)

I did one of these awhile back, but I think I got better Pics this time, so here we go.
Out of all the ways I’ve made Pork Roll, I believe the best way is in the Frying Pan.
Frying in a Pan keeps the slices nice & juicy instead of drying them out on a Grill.

Mrs Bear picked up a One Pound Log of Taylor Pork Roll, in a cloth bag for $8.49.
These are much better than the Pre-sliced Pork Roll, because the Pre-Sliced always Dry out, especially during Reheating.

So I removed the plastic Vacuum Bag from the Log, and then slit the cloth bag & peeled it off.
Then I put 4 lengthwise, evenly spaced slices in the log, from end to end, about 3/4” deep. These will help the slices lay flat in the frying Pan.
I don’t like to slice them too Thick, because I like the flavor of the outside surfaces more than the inside of the slices, however you don’t want to slice them too thin, because thin slices can get Dry & tough easily.
So I figure about 2 slices for each Sammy, and since a One Pound Log is smaller in Diameter than a small Burger Bun, it works out better with 2 slices per Bun anyway.
When Frying, you have to flip them often enough to keep a side from burning, unless you want to keep the heat down low & take forever to brown them up.

I don’t need a lot of things to go with my Pork Roll. I just like a slice of American Cheese, and a lot of Mustard on each one, and a bunch of Olives on the side.
French Fries go good with these Sammies, but I didn’t feel up to making them too.

That’s about All it takes to make this Bear Happy.

BTW: A One Pound Log gives us between 6 & 8 Sammies like this.

Thanks for Looking,

Bear

Looks pretty darn good John!
We do fried bologna all the time & it looks the same. I wonder , are the spices the same as bologna or is this something different.
This is kind of crazy but we had fried bologna last night for dinner!

Brother John I had that last week for breakfast,on a roll with egg & cheese. Likes

Oh I also had Als' dinner for breakfast this week Bologna

Anxious to hear Bear describe it but I think this is nothing like spam or bologna. This stuff is apparently legendary. Just recently saw it at my grocer but saw it was $9/lb. Now I realize that is the going rate. Gonna pick some up and see what the rage is about.

It's really hard to describe:
It's nothing like Spam---Although I enjoy Spam now and then, Pork Roll is nowhere near as greasy as Spam.
It's probably closest to a good Bologna, or a Really Good Spiced up Hot Dog could be similar.

But here's what another guy said about it:
I'm going to propose that if you want a similar taste and texture to Taylor Pork Roll then I'd suggest a nice German bologna. A thick slice of fried bologna with cheese and a fried egg will give you the closest experience to TPR that I know.
If you can get Wunderbar bologna then I think that's the best...
(If you can only get Oscar Meyer bologna then I'd suggest you have cereal for breakfast).

Probably closest to a real good Bologna when fried.

looks like spam, only from a bag.

Yeah, but it's much better than Spam.
And this is coming from a guy who loves Spam.
IMHO Spam makes a Great Breakfast with Eggs, but Pork Roll makes a Sammy 100X as good as Spam does.

I found the local Publix carried Taylor's Pork Roll a while back. It's pretty good and worth a try if you have never had it before. That is the only place I've seen it in my area (South of Atlanta GA). I guess we are not exactly pork roll country down here.

I could convert ANYONE that pokes fun of bologna with it.
I love good bologna . I get it at a local meat counter .
Haven't had pork roll , looked for it . Might try to make some .
Bear , having fried more than my share of bologna , I like the score then slice method . I used to do each slice .

Exactly!!
And if anybody wants to try Pork Roll, I doubt if they can find it for under $9 per pound unless they're shopping within 80 miles of Trenton, NJ.

We take our bologna pretty serious in Ohio http://www.onlyinyourstate.com/ohio/worlds-best-fried-bologna-oh/

I can relate to the love for TPR since we have access to GOOD bologna. Myself, I love garlic bologna made by a butcher 30m from me. I could convert ANYONE that pokes fun of bologna with it. Nothing like Oscar Meyer. That place above is 45m from me.

That Sammy Looks Awesome, and I'll bet it stands right up to a Pork Roll Sammy.
Thanks for that Link.

I found it in smaller packages, pre-sliced into 8 slices. Looks a little different than the large chub I've seen in most posts. The one I found at Publix was in the area of the hot dogs and premium bologna. This is what it looked like.

Yeah, That's the stuff we try to avoid. It's sliced too thin. It's fine if you don't have any leftovers.

Here's a Hint with that sliced stuff:
Only fry what you're gonna eat, because it's fine the first time you heat it.
If you make more than you're gonna eat, when you heat the leftover slices up it gets Hard & Dry.

LOL---I notched many a slice individually until I came up with that method.
Glad you like that, Buddy!!
