What’s everyone’s favorite steak sauce (to buy, not to make)? I’m not a fan of Worcestershire or A1 and Peter Luger’s is ok but not great. The best one I’ve ever had was at Quality Meats in NYC but I’ve never been able to find something similar in a store. Has a lot of tomato flavor to it kind of like a smoky ketchup or salsa. Recommendations?

I do not put on steak but I like Heinz 57. For steak about the only thing I use is either butter, or possibly a chimichurri if I'm feeling spunky.

My wife likes A1, me, all a good steak needs is salt and pepper, maybe a dollop of butter.
Took me years, but I finally got my wife to stop with the A1. It just killed me to make a perfect steak for her and then she dumps that ____ on it. I am almost shocked I got her to stop it.

I'm a HUGE ketchup fan. It's like that hot sauce commercial, "I put that #@$& on everything!!. I rarely have money for steak, but have a nice helping of eggs, sausage, bread and potatoes every morning. As I said I was a HUGE ketchup fan, then turned to steak sauce for toppings on my morning meal. A1, Heinz 57, A1 Thick and hearty, it didn't matter, I just like the added taste it brings. Recently I mixed up a batch of this steak sauce from my wife's cousin. It's the best thing since sliced bread. My only problem now is I go through it so fast, I forget to make some more. Seems like I always have something better to do, but then I regret not making any the next morning when I have nothing but ketchup for my meal. Here it is. Enjoy....
Homemade Steak Sauce
1¼ cups ketchup
2 tablespoons prepared yellow
mustard
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
4 drops hot pepper sauce (e.g.
TabascoTM)
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon ground black pepper

I suggest making a triple batch because it will be gone before you know it.

I don't expect mine will stop. She can eat A1 with some beef flavor, I will eat beef for the awesome flavor it comes with.

Wow, not a lot of love for steak sauce in here haha! Let me just clarify; I rarely put steak sauce on steak, I just like it with the other stuff. Like, if I make steak frites and don’t have time or energy to make a bordelaise then I’d want steak sauce with my fries. Or on a burger instead of ketchup. Ketchup just seems so wrong on a really good burger or with steak frites.
The problem is I’ve never found a steak sauce in a store that I’ve liked - only on the rarest occasion at a restaurant. Hence my initial question

Nothing wrong with steak sauce if that's your thing. It doesn't mean you can't cook a steak or are trying to cover up flavor. I don't use it often but I do get a craving for it from time to time. Some of these guys posting about letting the beef flavor speak for itself will be the first folks to tell you pulled pork needs to have finishing sauce added to the whole batch. Do you and find out what works for you

No steak sauce here ether... Although the wife will marinate a steak in worsty and Montreal steak seasoning... but nothing on it after it's cooked...

As for ketchup... the only time that is used is to put on top of meatloaf before cooking .. otherwise YUK

If I'm eating the steak that night then no sauce needed. If I'm reheating the next day then either A1 or(don't bash me to much) ketchup.

On a very rare occasion, I'll make some kind of mushroom sauce. But other than that, I'm in the no sauce on a good steak camp.

But growing up, we always had a bottle of Old Daley Inn on the table. It's a semi-local company that started out as a steakhouse 80something years ago. Its been a while, so I can't really remember exactly how it tasted, but I remember I loved it. I think it had kind of a tangy flavor. The ingredients are listed on this link, so you might be able to get an idea. https://www.stellofoods.com/catalog/p-100262/the-old-daley-inn-steak-sauce-10oz

I still wouldn't let it go anywhere near a properly cooked steak, but maybe something like a london broil.
