The only time I have eaten a hot dog without toppings is when I was a younger man. If the wife was gone somewhere and it is just me or just me and the kids (back then). The kids just wanted ketchup usually. I would keep it simple and just use spicy brown mustard and ketchup both.
I used to use hot dogs as an on the go bite when working outside, etc, put the dog in the bun, wrap with a paper towel and nuke for like 30 seconds and wolf it down, while getting back to work. Maybe just a quick stripe of mustard on those. Never yellow mustard, I only keep that stuff for recipes, never eat it straight up...reminds me too much of my early days having just moved out on my own and bieng poor. And those awful Oscar Mayer bologna sandwiches adults would make for the kids when I was a kid (gag reflex). I needed lots of that yellow mustard (only mustard most people had back in the 60's and 70's) to cover up the baloney taste, mayo couldn't do that. I was over 40 before I could even stand the taste of real German bologna, Mortadella and here in the southeast, cloth bologna. I think thats why I dont care for the regular "welfare" hot dogs, they are basically baloney sticks!
We never buy "regular" hot dogs anymore, not even Nathans. I cant remember the last time I had a regular, even upscale hot dog. It may be time to have some again, but we get the 1/4lb dogs from Sam's. They are the best I've had as a commercial dog. I deep fry them till the skin starts to crack.
I actually lost my taste for them. Weird, but just one day a couple years I didn't want anything hot dog, even the Sam's, but can eat a brat and those hybrid sausages just fine.
